Circle of the Dark Moon Coven

Circle of the Dark Moon Coven

You will need these items:

  • The usual tools, candles, paraphernalia for ritual

Items needed specific to working:

  • No special items are needed

Preparation:

Cleansing Sacred Space

(Maiden sweeps—with circular widdershins motions—widdershins about the ritual area. When she is satisfied that enough negativity has been removed she sets the besom aside.

Next, she lights the illumination candle.

Except for the above mentioned exceptions, the maiden ensures that the altar should be divided between male objects on the right—God candle, censer, salt dish, HP’s athame/sword/wand, and besom— and female objects on the left—Goddess candle, cauldron, bowl of water, chalice, libation plate (if used), bell, and the HPS’ athame/wand/sword. The pentacle should be placed forward and between the Goddess and God candles.

The maiden also ensures that the chalice is filled and the ‘cakes’ are on the plate. When these tasks are completed, she assists the HPS in any other way deemed necessary.)

Call to the Circle

HPS:     (Rings bell to call everyone to the circle.)

HPS:     This time is not a time; this place is not a place; today is not a day; and this night is not a night. I stand at the threshold between the worlds. I stand ready to part the veil of mysteries. May the Ancient Ones help and protect us on our journey.

Blessed be.

Coveners:     So mote it be.

The Challenge

HPS:     (After admission into sacred space, the HPS circulates among the coveners and smudges them with sage or lavender. When this action is completed, the HPS resumes her place by the altar.)

Consecration of the Elements

Charge at the Pentacle

(HP and HP kneel before the altar. The HP is on the right. Both of them place their right hands upon the pentacle. After a moment, they rise.)

Blessing the Salt

HPS:
(places dish of salt upon the pentacle)

HPS:     I consecrate thee O creature of salt from the Earth,

magickal aid, and seasoning for the Lady’s cauldron upon the hearth.

I cast from thee all hindrance and malignity, so that in my works of magick you may well serve me.

(HPS removes the dish of salt from the pentacle and then places the dish of water upon the pentacle. Then she takes the salt and using her Athame, drops into the water three measures of salt. She stirs the water three times with the tip of her athame. HPS sets the salt aside.)

Blessing the Water

HPS:     I consecrate thee O creature of water—bubbles in the cauldron of rebirth—life giving, whether swiftly flowing or falling from the firmament.

I cast from thee all hindrance and malignity, so that in my works of magick you may well serve me.

All:         So mote it be.

Blessing the Fire

(HP lights the incense)

HP:     I consecrate thee O creature of Fire—force of Magick’s pyre.

I cast from thee all hindrance and malignity, so that in my works of magick you may well serve me.

All:         So mote it be.

Blessing the Air

(HP places the censer containing incense upon the pentacle)

HP:     I consecrate thee O creature of Air blowing free with the imagination to dare.

I cast from thee all hindrance and malignity, so that in my works of magick you may well serve me.

All:         So mote it be.

(HP sets the censer aside.)

Circle Casting

(by Earth)

(HP and HPS take their athames and trace the sacred circle. If desired, they may leave a doorway in the northeastern quadrant. They walk together with the HP’s hand upon the HPS’ shoulder.)

HPS:     I conjure thee, O Circle of Power, to be a meeting place of love, joy and truth—a boundary between the worlds of men and the Realms the Mighty Ones.

A rampart and Protection against all wickedness that shall both contain and entertain the powers raised within—wherefore do I consecrate thee in the name of The Lord of the Sun and the Lady of the Moon.

Strengthening the Circle

(by Water)

(Witch 1: Sprinkles the salt and water mixture around the circle)

Witch 1:    Rain of water and salt sprinkled upon the ground,

This blessed water sprinkled round and round.

Protect us from wickedness and make our magick sound.

(Witch 1: When their circuit is completed, they replace the water upon the altar.)

(by Air)

(Witch 2: takes the censer and walks about the circle)

Witch 2:    Into the night sky, incense smoke, roil, rise, and writhe,

This smoke takes our intentions to the skies

Sunder us from the mundane like a scythe.

(Witch 2: When their circuit is completed, they replace the censer upon the altar.)

(by Fire)

(Witch 3: takes a candle and walks about the circle)

Witch 3:    Fire, shine true and bright,

Aid, grant clarity of sight,

Mayest the Gods be with us this night.

(Witch 3: When their circuit is completed, they replace the water upon the altar.)

Calling the Quarters

East    Hail, guardians of the East: Sylphs of the Airs.

High above in your sky mansions in the atmosphere

Your winds whisper of the imagination to dare.

Come to this circle on this Full Awakening moon Night,

To witness and protect these sacred magickal rites.

(Draw the invoking pentagram of Air)

Hail, guardians of the South: salamanders of Fire,

From your realms of brimstone and fire, your will never fails to inspire.

Come to this circle on this Full Awakening moon night,

To witness and protect these sacred magickal rites.

(Draw the invoking pentagram of Fire)

West    Hail, guardians of the West: Undines of the Waters.

Shallow and deep, your tides ebb and flow;

From stream to ocean, you hold depths of emotion, and mysteries to know.

Come to this circle on this Full Awakening moon Night,

To witness and protect these sacred magickal rites.

(Draw the invoking pentagram of Water)

North    Hail, guardians of the North: Gnomes of the Earth.

Keeping silent beneath mountains you materialize stone into fantastic works.

Come to this circle on this Full Awakening moon Night,

To witness and protect these sacred magickal rites.

(Draw the invoking pentagram of Earth)

Drawing down the Moon

Invocation to the Goddess

(HPS assumes the blessing position with her back to the coven.)

HPS:    I invoke thee and call upon thee, Mighty Mother of us all,

bringer of grain, grasses, and fruit trees tall.

By seed, by Hawthorn leaf, by bud and stem,

by flower and root,

O Goddess I surrender myself unto thy truth.

I call upon thee as though beseeching the moon above,

To descend upon me—thy servant priestess—and to show forth your presence and love.

(HPS turns and lights the Goddess candle.)

The Charge of the Goddess

(HPS as the Goddess Herself, faces the coven. If the Goddess so moves her, the HPS may now address the coven using the words of the Goddess Herself. Otherwise she may recite the Charge of the Goddess.)

HP:
Whenever ye have need of anything,

Once in the month and better it be when the moon is full,

Then shall ye assemble in some secret place,

And adore the spirit of me,

Who am Queen of all witches.

There shall ye assemble,

Ye who are fain to learn all sorcery,

Yet have not won its deepest secrets;

To these will I teach all things that are as yet unknown.

And ye shall be free from slavery;

And as a sign that ye be truly free,

You shall be naked in your rites;

And ye shall dance, sing, feast, make music and love,

All in my praise.

For mine is the ecstasy of the spirit,

And mine also is joy on earth;

For my law is love unto all beings.

Keep pure your highest ideals;

Strive ever towards them,

Let nothing stop you or turn you aside.

For mine is the secret door which

Opens upon the Land of Youth,

And mine is the cup of the wine of life,

And the Cauldron of Cerridwen,

Which is the Holy Vessel of Immortality.

I am the gracious Goddess,

Who gives the gift of joy unto the heart of man.

Upon earth,

I give the knowledge of the spirit eternal;

And beyond death,

I give peace, and freedom,

And reunion with those who have gone before.

Nor do I demand sacrifice;

For behold, I am the Mother of all living,

And my love is poured out upon the Earth.

I am the beauty of the green earth,

And the white moon among the stars,

And the mystery of the waters,

And the desire of the heart of man.

Call unto thy soul, arise, and come unto me.

For I am the soul of Nature,

Who gives life to the Universe.

From me all things proceed,

And unto me all things must return;

And before my face, beloved of gods and of men,

Let thine innermost divine self be enfolded,

In the rapture of the infinite.

Let my worship be within the heart that rejoices,

For behold all acts of love and pleasure are my rituals.

Therefore, let there be beauty and strength,

Power and compassion, honor and humility,

Mirth and reverence within you.

And thou who thinketh to seek for me,

Know thy seeking and yearning shall avail thee not,

Unless thou knoweth the mystery;

That if that which thou seekest thou findest not within thee,

Thou wilt never find it without thee.

For behold, I have been with thee from the beginning;

And I am that which is attained at the end of desire.

Drawing down the Sun

Invocation to the God

(HP assumes the Osiris position with his back to the coven.)

HP:     You are the stag of seven tines,

Actaeon and Cernnunos to Romulus and Remus.

You are the Lord of all things wild,

You are the consort of She whom we adore and before, you were her child.

You are the stag of seven tines.

Great Father, return to Earth, again,

Come at my call and show Yourself to men.

Shepherd of goats, upon the wild hill’s way,

Lead thy flock from night into day.

You are the stag of seven tines.

Forgotten are the ways of sleep and night—

Men seek for them whose eyes have lost the light.

Open the door of dreams, whereby men come to thee.

Shepherd of goats, ruler of wild things, Descend upon thy servant and priest. O answer unto me.

(HP turns and lights the God candle.)

Charge of the God

(HP as the God Himself, faces the coven. If the God so moves him, the HP may now address the coven using the words of the God Himself. Otherwise he may recite the Charge of the God.)

HP:     Listen to the words of the Horned God,

The Guardian of all things wild and free,

Keeper of the Gates of Death,

Whose Call we all must Heed:

I am the fire within your Heart,

The yearning of your Soul.

I, the Hunter of Knowledge, Seeker of the Holy Quest

I, who stand in the darkness, am He whom you call     Death.

I, the Consort and Mate of Her whom we adore,

Beckoned forth to Thee,

To learn the secrets of Death and Peace,

Come thou unto me.

I am corn at harvest and fruit on the trees.

I am He who leads you home.

With Scourge and Flame, Blade and Blood,

These are mine own gifts to thee.

Call unto me in the forest wild and hilltop bare,

And seek me in the Darkest Night.

I, who have been called by many names by those gathered in the moonlight.

Speak to thee in thy search, Come to dance and sing;

Come live and love; behold this is worshiping.

I, am thy Father. You are my children.

On swift night wings, it is I who lay you at the Mother’s feet;

to be reborn and to return again to seek .

Know me, I am the untamed wind,

the fury of storm.

Seek me with pride and humility,

and passion in your Soul.

Statement of Purpose

HPS:     Welcome everyone.

Tonight is the full Awakening Moon. This full moon is also known as the Seed Moon, and the Wind Moon. For a working tonight we will be doing a little cord magick to create a talisman for summoning a testudo—or psychic shield.

Power Raising

(HPS & HP lead the coven in Witches’ Rune)

Witches Rune

Darksome night and full Awakening moon,
Hearken to the Witches’ rune.
East then South, West then North,
Hear, Come, I call thee forth.

By all the powers of land and sea,
Be obedient unto me.
Wand and Pentacle and Sword,
Hearken ye unto my word.

Cords and Censer, Scourge and Knife,
Waken all ye into life.
Powers of the Witches’ Blade,
Come ye as the charge is made.

Queen of Heaven, Queen of Hell,
Send your aid unto the spell.
Horned Hunter of the night,
Work my will by magic rite.

By all the powers of land and sea,
As I do say “So mote it be”.
By all the might of Moon and Sun,
As I do, my will be done.

(If she likes, the HPS may have the coven chant the Eko Eko chant three times)

All:     Eko Eko Azarak
Eko Eko Zomelak

Zod Ru Koz E Zod Ru Koo

Zod ru Goz e goo ru moo

Eeo Eeo Hoo Hoo Hoo

Main Working Meditation

HP:     We call forth now the Elemental

Children of Gaia…

HPS:     Children of Gaia, Come to us now, We claim you as our own! (Gestures to all)

ALL:     CHILDREN OF GAIA, COME TO US NOW, WE CLAIM YOU AS OUR OWN!

EAST:     (Steps forward) I am the Air of Gaia:

The winds, the hurricanes and breezes,

The scent of flowers,

The vibrations of birdsong and drums.

I am Gaia’s breath, echoed in your own.

(Steps back into Circle)

ALL:     CHILDREN OF GAIA, COME TO US NOW,

WE CLAIM YOU AS OUR OWN!

SOUTH:    (Steps forward) I am the Fires of Gaia:

The volcanoes and geysers, the hot fluid core,

Alive and changing, the lightning, the sparks,

The slow smoldering chemistry of life.

ALL:     CHILDREN OF GAIA, COME TO US NOW,

WE CLAIM YOU AS OUR OWN!

WEST:     (Steps forth) I am the Waters of Gaia:

The rain and rivers, the seas and the snows.

We are the fluid in Gaia’s veins—

Feel us in your blood and tears.

ALL:     CHILDREN OF GAIA, COME TO US NOW,

WE CLAIM YOU AS OUR OWN!

NORTH:     (Steps out) I am the Earthwork of Gaia:

Mountains and caverns, beaches and canyons,

Crystals, metals, and gems.

We are Gaia’s flesh and bones.

(Steps back into Circle)

ALL: CHILDREN OF GAIA, COME TO US NOW,

WE CLAIM YOU AS OUR OWN!

HPS:     The Elemental Forces are here and it is good.

Now let us call forth the living beings:

Children of Gaia.

ALL:     CHILDREN OF GAIA, COME TO US NOW,

WE CLAIM YOU AS OUR OWN!

FAUNA:     (Steps forward) I am Fauna;

I stand for the animals.

Finned, furred, feathered, scaled and skinned.

We are Gaia’s Children.

We call to the humans to see us as your kin.

(Steps back into Circle)

ALL:     CHILDREN OF GAIA, COME TO US NOW,

WE CLAIM YOU AS OUR OWN!

FLORUS:     (Steps forward) I am Florus;

I stand for vegetation.

The canopy of forests, the healing herbs,

The flowers and fruits, vegetables and grains.

We are Gaia’s Children.

We call to the humans to see us as your kin.

(Steps back into Circle)

ALL:     CHILDREN OF GAIA, COME TO US NOW,

WE CLAIM YOU AS OUR OWN!!

HP:     Welcome, Children of Gaia!

We too are Children of the Mother.

We are your brothers and sisters.

You are part of us, as we are of you.

HPS:     She’s been waiting, waiting,

She’s been waiting so long!

She’s been waiting for her Children

To remember, to return.

HPS:     Consciousness—what a concept! How

did it come to be? Let’s imagine how it might

have been. How it was for us.

In a time before there was memory, we

lived in our Mother’s belly. We were embedded

in creation, held in her womb, woven

together in the fabric of life.

We were a part of the Earth and Waters,

and the Fires and the Air, one with trees and

beasts and rocks and seasons—a web of

teeming life, merging, connecting all in our

unconsciousness deep within the Mother.

Our Mother’s love was great and her desire

kept us held to her breast, and we suckled

for millennia—cycles of time spiraling

around and around and around.

And then—

In one moment of time, within one millennium,

we reached out of the darkness, and

emerged into the light.

And a dazzle of brightness that was the I,

the Me, the Ego, burst into glory. Our eyes

opened—my eyes opened, and I saw my image

in the waters.

For the first time I knew myself—ME.

You looked and saw yourself—YOU.

I AM ME! YOU ARE YOU! WE ARE

DIFFERENT!

It’s incredible. I know who I am. I can

think about me and my world. I can analyze,

categorize, name things. This is that and

that’s this, and I’ve named everything in the

world and it’s mine to change.

Our egos were a glorious gift. We made

great changes. We learned to speak and to

dance and tell stories and build shelters and

temples and to count and sing songs and track

the stars and to cook and make wine and to

heal the sick and to follow in our hearts where

our life went when it left us.

And it was good. It was very good.

Can you each remember back to your own

childhood or infancy to your own first individual

moment of epiphany? Try to remember

the exact moment when you knew who

you were. The blazing instant you understood

that you were not your Mommy or Daddy,

or the kitty or the TV set. You were your

very own person. (Pause)

And that person had a name. Consciousness is inextricably interwoven with the

magick of naming. We have names. They say that cats and dogs and other animals as well

have a secret name that only they know. We are who we are when we can name ourselves.

And now we will use that power and speak the name we wish to claim for ourselves—

starting with YOU!

HPS:     (Points to someone. Then everyone goes quickly deosil around the

circle and says their name.)

HPS:     Blessed am I, freedom am I

I am the infinite within myself

I can find no beginning,

I can find no end

All this I am. (Great Goddess…)

HP:     Consciousness has come forth on this

planet at various times and in various guises.

It is the product of an inexorable force greater

than plants and animals. Greater than the Elements;

even greater than time and space.

That is the mysterious force of evolution

to which all these things are subject. No matter

what the public schools in Georgia and

Mississippi teach, when evolution is outlawed,

only outlaws will evolve! (Pause for

laughs)

Now we will call upon that force to aid us

in our working today.

FAUNA/FLORUS:     (Step forward and read alternating passages.)

We call upon the spirit of evolution,

the miraculous force that inspires rocks and

dust to weave themselves into biology. You

have stood by us for millions and billions of

years— do not forsake us now. Empower us

and awaken in us pure and dazzling creativity.

FAUNA:        You who can turn scales into feathers,

seawater to blood, caterpillars to butterflies,

metamorphose our species,

awaken in us the powers that we need to

survive the present crisis and evolve into

more aeons of our solar journey.

FLORUS:        Awaken in us a sense of who we

truly are: tiny ephemeral blossoms on the

Tree of Life. Make the purposes and destiny

of that tree our own purpose and destiny.

FAUNA:        Fill each of us with love for our

true self, which includes all of the creatures

and plants and landscapes of the world. Fill

us with a powerful urge for the wellbeing

and continual unfolding of this self.

FLORUS:        May we speak in all human councils

on behalf of the animals and plants and

landscapes of the Earth.

FAUNA:        May we shine with a pure inner

passion that will spread rapidly through

these leaden times.

FLORUS:        May we all awaken to our true and

only nature—none other than the nature

of Gaia, this living planet Earth.

FAUNA:        We call upon the power that sustains

the planets in their orbits, that wheels

our Milky Way in its 200-million-year spiral,

to imbue our personalities and our relationships

with harmony, endurance, and joy.

FLORUS:        Fill us with a sense of immense time

so that our brief, flickering lives may truly

reflect the work of vast ages past and also

the millions of years of evolution whose potential

lies in our trembling hands.

FAUNA/FLORUS:     O stars, lend us your burning passion.

O silence, give weight to our voice.

We ask for the presence of the spirit

of Gaia to be with us here, for our own highest

good and for the highest good of all.

HPS:     Gaia! Mama Gaia!

Mama Gaia, can you hear?

Gaia! Mama Gaia!

We’re askin’ you to draw near.

‘Cause we’re gonna sing a song

An’ dance around the Fire

Gonna dance all night long,

Raising the energy higher!

HPS:     There is power in the name of Gaia. It is an

ancient name, from an ancient land. She has in

turn given her name to science: to geology,

geography, geophysics. Our Mother has a

name and now, thanks to science, she has a

face that we have all seen. Almost all humanity

has seen the lovely image of our home planet

spinning in her blue and white majesty—all

alone in the diamond-dusted blackness of space.

We are going to conjure up the face of Gaia

here today. We will do it as an act of will and

magickal focus. We want to visualize that image

floating here, in the center of our Circle.

All of us together beaming our intent into that

single tightly focused image. Let us close our eyes.

Imagine you are lying back and gazing up

at the night sky. Hold your hand up against

the stars, moving your fingers together and

apart, and watch the auras stretch thinner and

separate. And let this image morph into one of

cell division, as the dividing cell stretches

slowly apart until it separates into two.

From this image, let your imagination “rewind

the film” backwards, within your body,

so the two cells become one, merging with others,

over and over, until all of the cells in your

body become the one original zygote.

And realize that all those trillions of cells

were just multiple subdivisions of the first one,

still comprised of the same protoplasm, the

same DNA. And that’s why you are a singular

being, rather than a colony of separate cells.

But don’t stop there. Continue to follow

the thread of your own DNA back through

your parents, your ancestors, apes, monkeys,

lemurs, tree shrews, reptiles, amphibians,

fish—swimming upstream like a salmon, tracing

the river of life back to its original source—

back to the first cell that ever was.

Consecration of the Wine and Cakes (Symbolic Great Rite)

Great Rite (Symbolic)

(HPS takes the chalice and the HP stands before her holding his athame.)

HPS:         You are the spear of the Sun.

(HP lowers his athame into the wine)

HP:         And you are the Goddess of the Moon.

HPS/HP:     And together we are one.

(HP replaces his athame upon the altar.)

Consecration of the Wine

HPS:         (lays her athame down and places the chalice on the pentacle.)

HPS:    May this offering to the God and Goddess keep us from ever knowing thirst.

Consecration of the Cakes

HPS: (removes the chalice and replaces it with the plate of cakes before the. She touches each cake in turn with her athame.)

HPS:    May this offering to the God and Goddess keep us     from ever knowing hunger.

Simple Feast (Cakes and Ale)

(Note: the ceremony of Cakes and Ales now proceeds according to the HPS’ wishes: either the plate and chalice is passed from covener to covener and they serve themselves or each other according to coven custom or the HPS and HP proceed from covener to covener serving them and finally each other.)

HPS:     (When all of the coveners have partaken of the simple feast, the HPS places some food and drink in the libation bowl. HPS raises the libation plate in salute.)

HPS:         To the Gods.

Coveners:     To the Gods.

Closing the Circle

Release of Deities

Release of the Goddess

HPS:      (faces the altar, assumes the Goddess position—or alternatively salutes with athame—and recites)

Queen of the Universe who wears a mantle of stars and moonlight, on this Full Awakening moon night,

We thank you for your attending and witnessing these rites.

With your help, we shall start down the path to wisdom’s light.

For this boon, and glimpse

Of your magick, and mystery,

We salute and thank Thee.

Alas, our time together now is past.

We bid thee farewell.

Stay if you will and join our repast.

Leave us if you must.

Ere you leave us, know that all who met here

Did so in perfect love and perfect trust.

HPS: (Extinguishes the Goddess candle)

Release of the God

HP: (Assumes the Osiris position)

Thou art the Stag of Seven tines.

He who’s power is wide as the flood on a plain.

Your wisdom stretches like a hawk across the sky.

For this boon, and glimpse of your magick, and mystery,

We salute and thank Thee.

Alas, our time together now is past.

We bid thee farewell.

Stay if you will and join our repast.

Leave us if you must.

Ere you leave us, know that all who met here

Did so in perfect love and perfect trust.

HP:     (Extinguishes the God candle)

Quarter Dismissals

(The HP follows the HPS around the quarters—except where noted—while the rest of the coven remain in place around the circle but mimic the HPS’ gestures. At each quarter, the HPS and HP salute the quarter with their athames. After the dismissal, the HPS, HP, and coveners, draw the banishing pentagram. The banishing pentagram of Earth shall be used for all dismissals.)

North        Hail, guardians of the North, Gnomes of the Earth.

On this Full Awakening moon night, we thank you for witnessing and protecting our sacred magickal rite.

Go if you must; stay if you will; but know that we met in perfect love and perfect trust.

(Draw the banishing pentagram of Earth)

West        Hail, guardians of the West, Undines of the Waters.

On this Full Awakening moon night, we thank you for witnessing and protecting our sacred magickal rite.

Go if you must; stay if you will; but know that we met in perfect love and perfect trust.

(Draw the banishing pentagram of Water)

South        Hail, guardians of the South, Salamanders of Fire,

On this Full Awakening moon night, we thank you for witnessing and protecting our sacred magickal rite.

Go if you must; stay if you will; but know that we met in perfect love and perfect trust.

(Draw the banishing pentagram of Fire)

East        Hail, guardians of the East, Sylphs of the Airs,

On this Full Awakening moon night, we thank you for witnessing and protecting our sacred magickal rite.

Go if you must; stay if you will; but know that we met in perfect love and perfect trust.

(Draw the banishing pentagram of Air)

Opening the Circle

(HPS and HP face the altar together. The Deities have been thanked and the Quarters dismissed, therefore, the next action is to ‘take down’ the circle. Since the circle was thrice cast, it should be thrice unwound. Also, because the circle was cast deosil it should be undone in a widdershins direction.)

(HPS walks the circle widdershins while reciting the incantation to dissemble sacred space.)

HPS:     O Circle of Power, as I have conjured thee I now release your energies into this blade.

(In your mind’s eye, see the circle dissolve into a wispy energy smoke, which the glowing blade readily absorbs)

Where there once existed a rampart between this world and the Otherworld, the rampart is no more. Once again, our realms are separate. However, the love and joy with which we met here tonight remains undiminished.

HPS:     (Rejoins the HP at the altar and then together they face the rest of the coven)

Just as the Moon and Stars must yield to the Sun When night is done,

So must we depart at ritual’s end.

It is time for us to leave this realm of magick, mystery, and the circle of ancestors and friends.

The circle is open but remains unbroken.

Blessed be.

Coveners:     Blessed be.

These days I’m getting my World of Warcraft (WoW) fix (and to some extent my magick fix since I always play a caster) via the Xbox and the never-ending game of Skyrim. I haven’t played WoW seriously in over a year but sometimes I miss it.

Recently in Skyrim, I’ve acquired the Daedric dog, Barbas. Barbas is one bad-ass mutt. Last night we were clearing Wolf Skull Cave and between him and my Dremora summons, they fairly leveled the place. More importantly, he maintained aggro (gamer jargon for the ability to keep all the bad guys focused on fighting them) allowing me to pummel the assorted necromancers and draugers with lightning and fire bolts.

It’s this ability of Barbas’ that made me reminisce about ‘tanks’ in WoW (players whose sole job is to aggro everything onto them.) Using him almost feels like cheating. I’ve gotten so used to getting my arse handed to me that anything less feels like using cheat codes. I know, you can’t use cheat codes on the Xbox, but you get my drift. However, this is exactly how game play proceeds in WoW: the tanks attempt to aggro all the mobs (bad guys) against themselves so the damage dealers are free to fire or melee with impunity (I love Warlocks in WoW—and hunters) while the healers try to keep the tank alive because if the tank dies everybody dies. Oh how I miss those inglorious dungeon wipes. Every day in Azeroth is a good day to die.

I guess at some point everyone leaves Azeroth–at least for a while–and moves on to other lands, on to other adventures, or like the Susan Pevensie character from the Narnia novels, returns to their ‘real’ life. But is Azeroth any less real than the ‘real’ world? Ten million players focusing their intentions on the events unfolding in Azeroth make for the creation of one powerful and enduring thought-form. The Kybalion reminds us that we are all manifestations of the Great Creative Force; we are all part of the universal dream of the gods so while WoW may be a construct of our own design, it is part of the greater universal construct unfolding from the infinite possibilities of the astral and therefore is just as “real” as the √(-1) which is an imaginary number yet is considered real. Imaginary numbers are often used to show the existence of overlapping domains or dimensions so while they are ‘imaginary’ they are also ‘real’ numbers much like our concepts of the mundane manifestation and the astral plane. How is that for a Shakespeare meets Pythagoras type of pun?

True, Azeroth is just the other side of the screen and as such is as near or far as the astral plane. Or perhaps the screen is like palantir (Tolkienese for scrying crystal balls) or more mundanely a window that looks out onto a different world, but, a world no less real than any other manifestation.

Although, in some sense, I have moved on and now travel different lands, unlike the then become self-absorbed Susan whom Peter Pevensie in the final Narnia novel declares “Susan is no longer a friend of Narnia” I remain a friend of Azeroth and no doubt someday my wonderings will again find me wandering its fair plains, mountains, and forests.

` Insofar as the Craft of the Wise is the most ancient and most honorable creed of

humankind, it behooves all who are Witches to act in ways that give respect to the

Old Gods, to their sisters and brothers of the Craft, and to themselves.

Therefore, be it noted that:

1. Chivalry is a high code of honor which is of most ancient Pagan origin, and must

be lived by all who follow the old ways.

2. It must be kenned that thoughts and intent put forth on this Middle Earth will

wax strong in other worlds beyond and return… bringing into creation, on this

world, that which had been sent forth. Thus one should exercise discipline, for “as

ye plant, so shall ye harvest.”

3. It is only by preparing our minds to be as Gods that we can ultimately attain

godhead.

4. “This above all… to thine own self be true…”

5. A Witch’s word must have the validity of a signed and witnessed oath. Thus,

give thy word sparingly, but adhere to it like iron.

6. Refrain from speaking ill of others, for not all truths of the

matter may be known.

7. Pass not unverified words about another, for hearsay is, in large

part, a thing of falsehoods.

8. Be thou honest with others, and have them know that honesty is

likewise expected of them.

9. The fury of the moment plays folly with the truth; to keep one’s

head is a virtue.

10. Contemplate always the consequences of thine acts upon others.

Strive not to do harm.

11. Diverse covens may well have diverse views of love between members

and with others. When a coven, clan, or grove is visited or joined, one should

discern quietly their practices, and abide thereby.

12. Dignity, a gracious manner, and a good humor are much to be admired.

13. As a Witch, thou has power, and thy powers wax strongly as wisdom

increases. Therefore, exercise discretion in the use thereof.

14. Courage and honor endure forever. Their echoes remain when the

mountains have crumbled to dust.

15. Pledge friendship and fealty to those who so warrant. Strengthen

others of the Brethren and they shall strengthen thee.

16. Thou shalt not reveal the secrets of another Witch or Coven. Others have labored

long and hard for them, and cherish them as treasures.

1804

17. Though there may be differences among those of the Old Ways, those

who are once-born must see nothing, and must hear nothing.

18. Those who follow the mysteries should be above reproach in the eyes of the

world.

19. The laws of the land should be obeyed whenever possible and within

reason, for in the main they have been chosen with wisdom.

20. Have pride in thyself and seek perfection in body and in mind. For

the Lady has said, “How canst thou honor another unless thou give honor to thyself

first?”

21. Those who seek the Mysteries should consider themselves the select

of the Gods, for it is they would lead the race of humankind to the highest of

thrones and beyond the very stars.

Dark Moon of The

First-Degree Initiation

4 December 2010

Circle of the Dark Moon

Coven

You will need these items:

  • The usual tools, candles, paraphernalia for ritual

Items specific to the Ritual

  • Blindfold
  • A length of twine/rope at least 8 feet long
  • Anointing Oil
  • Hand bell
  • 3 lengths of red cord (1 of 9 feet and 2 of 4 feet 6 inches)
  • A scourge
  • A boline

Preparation:

Cleansing Sacred Space

Sweep the area with besom then smudge with violet-sage.

Cleansing Sacred Space

(Maiden sweeps—with circular widdershins motions—widdershins about the ritual area.
When she is satisfied that enough negativity has been removed she sets the besom aside. Next, she lights the black crone/resolutions candle.
Finally, the maiden checks the layout of the altar making sure that the black candle is at
least near the cauldron.

Except for the above mentioned exceptions, the maiden ensures that the altar should be
divided between male objects on the right—God candle, censer, salt dish, HP’s
athame/sword/wand, and besom— and female objects on the left—Goddess candle,

cauldron, bowl of water, chalice, libation plate (if used), bell, and the HPS’ athame/wand/sword. The pentacle should be placed forward and between the Goddess and God candles.

The maiden also ensures that the chalice is filled and the ‘cakes’ are on the plate. When these tasks are completed, she assists the HPS in any other way deemed necessary. )

Call to the Circle

HPS: (Rings bell to call everyone to the circle.)

HPS: This time is not a time; this place is not a place; today is not a day;

and this night is not a night. I stand at the threshold between the worlds. I stand ready to part the veil of mysteries may the Ancient Ones help and protect us on this mighty journey.

Blessed be.

Coveners: So mote it be.

Consecration of the Elements

Charge at the Pentacle

(HP and HP kneel before the altar. The HP is on the right. Both of them place their right hands upon the pentacle. After a moment, they rise.)

Blessing the Salt

HPS: (places dish of salt upon the pentacle)
HPS: I consecrate thee O creature of salt from the Earth,
magickal aid, and seasoning for Hecate’s black cauldron upon the
hearth.

I cast from thee all hindrance and malignity, so that in my works of magick you may well serve me.

(HPS removes the dish of salt from the pentacle and then places the dish of water upon the pentacle. Then she takes the salt and using her athame drops into the water three measures of salt. She stirs the water three times with the tip of her athame. HPS sets the salt aside.)

Blessing the Water

HPS: I consecrate thee O creature of water—dark bubbles in the
cauldron of rebirth—life giving, whether swiftly flowing or falling
from the firmament.
I cast from thee all hindrance and malignity, so that in my works of
magick you may well serve me.
All: So mote it be.

Blessing the Air

(HP places the censer containing incense upon the pentacle)

HP: I consecrate thee O creature of Air—force of the dark moon that

brings the imagination to dare.

I cast from thee all hindrance and malignity, so that in my works of
magick you may well serve me.

All: So mote it be.

Blessing the Fire

(HP lights the incense)

HP: I consecrate thee O creature of Fire—force of Magick’s pyre.

I cast from thee all hindrance and malignity, so that in my works of magick you may well serve me.

All: So mote it be.

(HP sets the censer aside.)

Circle Casting

By Earth

(HP holds the scabbard while the HPS draws the sword. HPS and HP proceed around the circle. While walking about the circle, HPS holds sword pointed at the perimeter. )

HPS: (Traces the about the circle with her athame or sword. If “increasing magick” is to be done she walks deosil about the circle otherwise she travels widdershins if banishing magick is being performed.)

HPS: I conjure thee, O Circle of Power to be a meeting place of love, joy and truth:

A boundary between the worlds of men and the Realms of the Mighty Ones.

This magick circle is both a rampart and protection against all wickedness that shall both contain and entertain the powers that shall be raised within.

Wherefore do I consecrate thee in the name of Lugh and Hecate.

Strengthening the Circle

By Water

Witch 1: Rain of water and salt sprinkled upon the ground,

Protect us from wickedness, and make our magick sound.

(Sprinkles the salt and water mixture around the circle)

By Air

Witch 2: Into the night sky, incense smoke, roil, rise, and writhe,

Sunder us from the mundane like a scythe.

(Takes incense around circle)

By Fire

Witch 3: Fire, shine true and bright,

Aid, grant clarity of sight,

Mayest the Gods be with us this night.

(Takes candle around circle)

Calling the Quarters

Note: if the coven plans to perform “increasing magick,” the quarters should be called in usual deosil order of East, South, West, and then North.

However, if the coven plans don’t include a working, or banishing magick is being performed, then, the quarters should be called in widdershins order of East, North, West, and then South. For the purposes of this document, the quarters will be presented in traditional dark moon widdershins order.

The Individual quarter calls themselves are presented on separate pages for ease of changing calling order. Page numbers have also been removed on the quarter call pages so that all one needs to do is reorder the pages to correctly reflect the type of magick being performed during the ritual.

East: Hail and welcome ye Sylphs of the Airs and realms of the Atmosphere,

I do summon, stir, and call you up.

Bring with you the hosts of the watchtowers of the East

to guard our circle and to witness our rites.

Sylphs, thou art the gatekeepers of the Eastern Portals of Knowledge and Intellect.

(Draw the invoking pentagram of Air)

South: Hail and welcome ye Salamanders from your realms of Fire,

I do summon, stir, and call you up.

Bring with you the hosts of the watchtowers of the South

to guard our circle and to witness our rites.

Salamanders, thou art the gatekeepers of the Southern Portal.

(Draw the invoking pentagram of Fire)

West: Hail and welcome ye Undines of the Waters,

I do summon, stir, and call you up.

Bring with you the hosts of the watchtowers of the West

to guard our circle and to witness our rites.

Undines, thou art the gatekeepers of the Western Portals to Death and Initiation.

(Draw the invoking pentagram of Water)

North: Hail and welcome ye Gnomes, Dwarves, and Trolls of the Earthen Realms,

I do summon, stir, and call you up.

Bring with you the hosts of the watchtowers of the North

to guard our circle and to witness our rites.

Gnomes, Dwarves, and Trolls thou art the gatekeepers of the Northern Portal of Boreas.

(Draw the invoking pentagram of Earth)

Drawing Down the Dark Moon

Invocation to the Dark Goddess

(HPS & HPS return to the altar)

HPS : (Assumes the Goddess position)

I invoke thee and call upon thee, Dark Mother of us all.
Thy names are too numerous to tell: Hecate, Artemis, Lilith, and the
Queen of Hell.

Protector of witches, within the darkness you are the light.
At the crossroads, I await thee; please heed my call.
O Hecate, be with me on this dark moon night.

Where the veil is thinnest, new beginnings begun, and banishments done,
you teach us the mysteries on the dark moon night.
Mistress of all sorceries, to those brave enough, you grant the sight.
O Hecate, please come unto me; grant me your wisdom’s might.

(HPS lights the Goddess Candle)

(HP stands before the HPS)

HPS: (draws invoking pentagram before the HP)

Of the Mother darksome and divine,
Mine is the scourge and mine is the kiss;
The five-point star of love and bliss-
Here I charge you, in this sign.

(HP: stands aside)

The Charge of the Dark Goddess

HP: Listen to the words of the Dark Mother, who of old was called Hecate, Nuit, Morrigan, Banba, Erda, Macha, MotherNight, Sekhmet and many other names.

HPS: Whenever you seek wisdom, at the time of the Darkening Moon, come together in love and trust and learn of Me, who am the Wisest of Crones. You who search the mysteries of the Earth, the secrets of air and darkness, of blood and fire, the silence of the uttermost stars, come unto me, and I shall whisper to you in the depths of midnight.

You shall approach Me in silence, and as a sign that you are free from fear, your breast shall bare to My blade, for fear has no place in My mysteries, and that which you seek of me will destroy you if you fear it.

For I am the dolmen arch beyond which stretch the mysteries of infinity. I am the silence before birth and after death. I am the clouded mirror in which you scry your own soul. I am mist in the twilight, the vast and starry sky of midnight, shadows on the Moon. All things come to Me in the end, and yet I am the beginning of all. I meet you at the crossroads; I lead you through the darkness, my hand you grasp in the passage between the worlds. To those that toy with Me, I am an instrument of self-destruction. Yet to the true seeker do I bring knowledge beyond mortal comprehension.

Of you shall I demand the utter truth of all that you are, and in return shall I give you all that you may be, all that I am. For My wisdom is beyond the Ages, and knowledge of My secrets is power over self, over fear, over death. Nor do I demand aught of you, which you cannot give. For I am the Mother of Mysteries, and as you know Me so shall you learn to know yourself.

Drawing Down the Sun

Invocation to the Dark God

HP: I invoke thee and call upon thee, Dark Father of us all.

Thy names are too numerous to tell: Anubis, Osiris, Hades,
Cernunnos, Lugh, and the Lord of the Underworld.

To men lost in the dark you provide you provide succor and light.
At the crossroads of Worlds I await thee; please heed my call.
O Dark Father, be with me on this dark moon night.

Where the veil is thinnest, new beginnings begun, and bindings
and banishments done,
you teach us the mysteries and how all are connected as though
one.

Master of the dark moon night, for those brave enough you banish
sleep and grant the sight.

O Lugh please come unto me at this dark moon night and grant me
your wisdom’s might.

(HPS: stands before the HP)

(HP: lights the God Candle)

HP: (draws invoking pentagram before the HPS)

HP: I am the stag of seven tines, Lord of the Underworld, darksome, and divine, Mine is the realm of shadow sublime. Mine is the scourge and mine is the kiss; The five-point star of love and bliss- Here I charge you, in this sign.

(HPS: stands aside)

Charge of the Dark God

(HP assumes the Osiris position with his back to the coven.)

HPS: Listen to the words of the Dark God, who was of old called Donn,

Anubis, Hades by many

other names:

HP : I am the shadow in the bright day, I am the reminder of mortality at the height of living.

I am the never-ending veil of Night where the Star Goddess dances.

I am the Death that must be so that Life may continue, for behold, Life is immortal because the living must die.

I am the strength that protects, that limits; I am the power that says No, and NO further, and That Is Enough. I am the things that cannot be spoken of, and I am the laughter at the edge of Death.

Come with me into the warm enfolding dark; feel my caresses in the hands, in the mouth, in the body of one you love, and be transformed.

Gather in the moonless night and speak in unknown tongues; the Dark Mother and I will listen. Sing to us, and cry out, and the Power will be yours to wield.

Blow me a kiss when the sky is dark, and I will smile, but no kiss return, for my kiss is the final one for all mortal flesh.

HPS & HP: Akhera goti—akhera beiti

Statement of Purpose

HP/HPS: The dark moon is a time for beginnings and endings. Tonight, our dedicants have reached childhood’s end and are ready to be reborn as first-degree witches.

Blessed be.

Power Raising

(HPS and HP lead any others in the New Moon Rune)

Dark Moon Rune

Meditate upon the waxing of the moon.
According to Celtic tradition,
from new to full the waxing of Lady Lune,
is a time of inner transformation.

In the dark, listen to the heightened light.
Your awareness soars—your soul’s voice so bright.
Meditate on the moon and not on this rhyme.
During the waxing moon, spend five minutes time.

See Hecate, Lady of the new moon,
Come to assist you and offer a boon.
At the witching hour when her magick peaks,
Channel her wisdom and hear your soul speak.

(Extending the arms in the Osiris position )

For around me flames of the pentagram burn.

The Initiation

Initiator: O thou who standest at the threshold between the pleasant world of the mundane and the magickal domain of the Lords and Ladies of the Outer Planes. Hast thou the courage to make the journey to make the crossing?

Initiator: (Places the point of the athame against the postulant’s heart)

For I say verily, it would be better for you to rush upon my blade and seek death than to enter herein with fear in your heart.

Postulant: I have two passwords: perfect love and perfect trust.

Initiator: All who have such are doubly welcome. I now give thee a third password to pass through this dread doorway.

(Lays down the athame and kisses the postulant on the cheek. The initiator then goes behind the postulant and pushes them into the circle.)

HPS: (seals the doorway)

Initiator: (leads the postulant to the eastern quarter)

Take heed ye Mighty Ones, Eastern Spirits of Air that Postulant name is properly prepared to be initiated as priestess and witch.

(leads the postulant to the southern quarter)

Take heed ye Mighty Ones, Southern Spirits of Fire that Postulant name is properly prepared to be initiated as priestess and witch.

(leads the postulant to the western quarter)

Take heed ye Mighty Ones, Western Spirits of Air that Postulant name is properly prepared to be initiated as priestess and witch.

(leads the postulant to the northern quarter)

Take heed ye Mighty Ones, Northern Spirits of Earth that Postulant name is properly prepared to be initiated as priestess and witch.

(leads the postulant to the center of the circle and the rest of the coven walk slowly deosil around the postulant while chanting in low voices)

Coveners: (chant in low voices)

Eko Eko Azarak
Eko Eko Zomelak

Eko Eko Azarak
Eko Eko Zomelak

Eko Eko Lugh

Eko Eko Hecate

(Initiator signals the coveners to return to their places)

Initiator: In other religions, the postulant kneels while the priest towers over them. But in the Arts Magickal we are taught to serve first, and be humble and welcome the newcomer.

Five-fold Kiss

Initiator:
(administers the five-fold kiss—right foot, left foot, right knee, left knee, womb, right breast, left breast and lips)

Blessed be thy feet, that have brought me in these ways.

Blessed be thy knees, that shall kneel at the sacred altar.

Blessed be thy womb/penis, without which we would not be.

Blessed be thy breasts, formed in beauty/strength.

Blessed be thy lips, which shall utter the sacred names.

Taking of the Measure

Initiator: Now we are going to take your measure.

HPS: (HPS takes the measure of the postulant with the twine or ribbon. First, she measures from feet to crown and cuts off that length. Then using the cut length, measures around the forehead of the postulant and ties a knot in the length. Next the HPS measures around the heart and ties a knot in the measure to mark it. Finally, the HPS measures around the hips and marks that measurement with a knot.

When she’s finished the HPS winds up the measure and lays it on the altar.)

The Test

Initiator: Before thou art sworn, art thou ready to pass the ordeal and suffer for the knowledge?

Postulant: I am.

HPS: (Helps the postulant to kneel and lower their head. She then loosens and removes the leg bindings. She then ties the postulant’s knees and ankles together. Next, the HPS fetches the scourge from the altar.)

HPS: (rings the bell 3 times)

Three.

Initiator: (scourges the postulant with 3 light strokes.)

HPS: Seven.

Initiator: (scourges the postulant with 7 light strokes.)

HPS: Nine.

Initiator: (scourges the postulant with 9 light strokes.)

HPS: Twenty-one.

Initiator: (scourges the postulant with 21 light strokes.)

Initiator: Thou hast bravely passed the test. Are you ready to swear that thou wilt always be true to the Arts?

Postulant: I am.

The Oath

Initiator: Art thou ready to always help, protect, and defend thy brothers and sisters of the Arts?

Postulant: I am.

Initiator: Then repeat after me phrase by phrase.

I, Postulant name, in the presence of the Elder Gods do of my own free will and accord, and without reservation,

most solemnly swear, that I will ever keep secret what I’m asked to keep secret, and never reveal, the secrets of the Arts Magickal, except it be to a proper person, properly prepared within a Circle such as I am in now;

And, that I will never deny the secrets to such a person if he or she be properly vouched for by a brother or sister of the Art.

That I will learn to master the Art Magical; but ever remember the rune: “What good be the tools without the inner light? What good be magick without wisdom’s sight?”

That in due course I will strive to find a worthy pupil in magick, to whom in future years I can hand down the knowledge I acquire.

That I will never use the Art Magickal merely to impress foolish persons. Nor shall I invoke magick for any wrongful end.

That I will help the Craft of the Wise, and hold its honor as I would my own.

This I swear before the Elder Gods and those of the Art gathered here and by my hopes of a future life, mindful that my measure has been taken. May my weapons turn against me, and Karma reward me justly should I break this my solemn oath.

Postulant: (repeats each phrase)

HPS: (Helps the postulant to their feet. She then retrieves the anointing oil and the chalice of wine.)

Initiator: (takes a bit of oil)

I hereby sign thee with the Triple Sign. I consecrate thee with oil.

(Touches the postulant above the pubic hair, on the right breast and then the left breast)

(Moistens his lips with a bit of wine)

I consecrate thee with my lips…

(Kisses the postulant in the same places as he/she touched with oil.)

…Priestess and Witch.

HPS: (Removes the postulant’s bindings.)

(Members of the coven now may congratulate the Universe’s newest witch)

Introduction of the Tools

(The Initiator removes each tool from the altar with a kiss and hands it to the new initiate. The initiator explains each tool in turn and when he is finished with an explanation, the initiate gives the tool to HPS who returns it to the altar with a kiss.)

Initiator: First, I present the Magic Sword. With this, as with the athame, thou canst form all Magic Circles, dominate, subdue and punish all rebellious spirits and daemons, and even persuade angels and good spirits. With this in thy hand, thou art ruler of the Circle.

Next, I present the Athame. This is the true witch’s weapon and has all the powers of the Magic Sword.

Next, I present the White-hilted knife. Its use is to form all instruments used in the Art. It can only be used in a Magick Circle.

Next, I present the Wand. Its use is to call up and control certain angels and genii to whom it would not be meet to use the Magick Sword.

Next, I present the Cup. This is the vessel of the Goddess, the Cauldron of Cerridwen, the Holy Grail of Immortality. From this we drink in

Comradeship, and in honor of the Goddess.

Next, I present the Pentacle. This is for the purpose of calling up appropriate spirits.

Next, I present the Scourge. This is the sign of power and domination. It is also used to cause purification and enlightenment. For it is written: “To learn you must suffer and be purified.” Art thou willing to suffer to learn?”

Postulant: I am.

Initiator: Next, and lastly I present the cords. They are of use to bind the Sigils of The Art; also to bind the material basis; also, they are necessary in the Oath.

In the name of Lugh, Cernunnos, Brighid and Hecate, I now salute thee, newly consecrated Witch and Priest/ess of the Goddess.

(Acknowledges this achievement in some way—i.e. handshake, kiss, hug, etc.)

Reintroduction of to the Quarters

Initiator: (leads the postulant to the eastern quarter)

Take heed ye Mighty Ones, Eastern Spirits of Air that postulant name is consecrated as priestess, witch, and hidden child of the Goddess.

(leads the postulant to the southern quarter)

Take heed ye Mighty Ones, Southern Spirits of Fire that postulant name is been consecrated as priestess, witch, and hidden child of the Goddess.

(leads the postulant to the western quarter)

Take heed ye Mighty Ones, Western Spirits of Water that postulant name is been consecrated as priestess, witch, hidden and child of the Goddess.

(leads the postulant to the northern quarter)

Take heed ye Mighty Ones, Northern Spirits of Earth that postulant name is been consecrated as priestess, witch, and hidden child of the Goddess.

Consecration of the Wine and Cakes (Symbolic Great Rite)

The Great Rite (Symbolic)

HP: For in the Days of Old, the Body of Woman was the altar. Come, let us all share the loving cup of the God and the Goddess

(HP holds the blade aloft)

HP: Blade of my heart and my intent Help us all to remember That what is given is received back threefold Help us all to remember To receive as graciously as we give.

HPS: For in the days of Old, the body of Man was the power

Come, let us share the loving cup of the Goddess and the God.

(She holds the chalice aloft)

HPS: Chalice of my heart and my intent

Help us all to remember

That what is received must be given back three times

Help us all to remember

To give as graciously as we receive

HP: As the athame is the male.

HPS: So the Chalice is to the female.

HPS/HP: And the two are conjoined as one in truth.

Consecration of the Wine

HPS: (lays her athame down and places the chalice on the pentacle.)

HPS: May this offering to the God and Goddess keep us from ever knowing thirst.

Consecration of the Cakes

(HP holds the platter of cakes before the HPS. She touches each cake in turn)

HPS: This food is the blessings gods to our bodies. Let us Partake of it freely. And, as we share, let us remember always to see to it that aught that we have we share with those who have nothing.

Cakes and Ale

Note: the ceremony of Cakes and Ales now proceeds according to the HPS’ wishes: either the plate and chalice is passed from covener to covener and they serve themselves or each other according to coven custom or the HPS and HP proceed from covener to covener serving them and finally each other.

Hecate, Queen of all Sorceries,
Your magick, terrible to behold, thou art cloaked in the mysteries,
On this dark moon night,
You have taught us that even in the Underworld there is light.
Past the crossroads, beneath the moonless dolmen arch,
Protector of witches, you walk with us along path of wisdom’s start.

For this boon, and glimpse
Of your magick, and mystery,
We salute and thank Thee.

Alas, our time together now is past.
We bid thee farewell.

Stay if you will and join our repast;
Leave us if you must.
Ere you leave us, know that all who met here
Did so in perfect love and perfect trust.

(Extinguishes the Goddess candle)

Release of the God

HP: (Assumes the Osiris position)

Thou art the Stag of Seven tines.
He who’s power is wide as the flood on a plain.
Your wisdom stretches like a hawk across the sky.
Who but you with smoke sets our heads afire?
You taught us the secrets of the unhewn dolmen.

For this boon, and glimpse
Of your magick, and mystery,
We salute and thank Thee.

Alas, our time together now is past.
We bid thee farewell.
Stay if you will and join our repast;
Leave us if you must.
Ere you leave us, know that all who met here
Did so in perfect love and perfect trust.

Quarter Dismissals

(The HP follows the HPS around the quarters—except where noted—while the rest of the coven remain in place around the circle but mimic the HPS’ gestures. At each quarter, the HPS and HP salute the quarter with their athames. After the dismissal, the HPS, HP, and coveners, draw the banishing pentagram.)

North: Hail, Gnomes, Dwarves, and Trolls who toil in rock and dirt, on this Dark Moon night, we thank you for witnessing and protecting these sacred magickal rites.

Lead the hosts of the Watchtowers of the North and return to your Realms of Earth, Borean snow and ice.

(Draw the banishing pentagram of Earth)

West: Hail, Undines of the Rivers, Lakes, and Seas, on this Dark Moon night,

we thank you for witnessing and protecting these sacred magickal rites.

Lead the hosts of the Watchtowers of the West and return to your Realms of Water.

(Draw the banishing pentagram of Water)

South: Hail, Salamanders of heat and light, on this Dark Moon night,

we thank you for witnessing and protecting these sacred magickal rites.

Lead the hosts of the Watchtowers of South and return to your Realms of Lava, Heat, and Fire.

(Draw the banishing pentagram of Fire)

East: Hail, Sylphs of the atmospheres, on this Dark Moon night,

we thank you for witnessing and protecting these sacred magickal rites.

Lead the hosts of the Watchtowers of East and return to your Realms of Air.

(Draw the banishing pentagram of Air)

Grounding the Circle

(HPS and HP face the altar together. The Deities have been thanked and the Quarters dismissed, therefore, the next action is to ‘take down’ the circle. Since the circle was thrice cast, it should be thrice unwound. Also, because the circle was cast doesil it should be undone in a widdershins direction.

An Athame or sword may be used; but I prefer the sword for reasons you shall see later. Assuming it was the HPS who cast the circle, we’ll let her undo it.)

(HP holds the scabbard while the HPS draws the sword. HPS and HP proceed around the circle. While walking about the circle, HPS holds sword pointed at the perimeter.)

HPS: O Circle of Power, as I have conjured thee I now release thy energies into this blade.

(When three widdershins circuits have been completed, the HP remains at the altar while the HPS walks to the center of the circle and grounds the sword—this is why I said that I prefer using a sword.)

HPS: This energy I return unto Mother Earth. May it help assuage her hurts in some small fashion.

(HPS rejoins the HP at the altar and then together they face the rest of the coven)

HPS: The circle is open but remains unbroken. Brothers and sisters, we are children of the Lord and Lady. May they always live within our

hearts, our magick, and our lives. Merry did we meet, and merry do we part. Merry may we meet again.

Blessed be.

Coveners: Blessed be.

Q. How much do classes cost?
A. There is no cost for classes.

Q. Where do I attend classes?
A. We hold both in-person classes (we’re located in Warner Robins, GA) and online classes.

Q. Do I need any books?
A. Both the online and in person classes we use the following books:

The Real Witches Craft by Kate West,
The Inner Temple of Witchcraft by Christopher Penzak,
Buckland’s Complete Book of Witchcraft by Raymond Buckland,
Wicca: the Complete Craft by DJ Conway.

The book list varies by year to year and depends on the degree program. It’s not necessary buy any of the books. I rarely give
reading assignments. While I base my lectures on the above listed books, lecture content is not exclusively from said sources.

Q. How do the online classes work? You just email me a lesson and then maybe I get to hear from an instructor once in a while–
right?
A. No, teachers and students interact just as though they were in a classroom. The online classes use Skype. Skype is a program which
allows student and teacher to converse and to see each other over the internet. To use Skype, you’ll have to download the client
program from http://Skype.com.

Q. When are classes held?
A. The in person classes are held Saturdays at 2:00 PM Eastern Time.

Q. What time are the online classes held?
Online classes are held Sundays at 3:00 PM Eastern Time.

Q. What else can you tell me about the classes?
A. Class duration is usually one to one and a half hours long. The class format is a mixture of lectures based on reading material, and
our own experience coupled with teachings specific to the Dark Moon Tradition, and student participation. Additionally, we try to be
as hands-on as possible when it comes to things like herbalism, divination, and other ‘crafty’ types of activities. Additionally as part
of their training, our second-degree students will from time to time teach a class. One of the students will also be assigned to
mentor you. Not to say you won’t be able to email or call me with questions should you want to do so.

Q. How do I get setup for the online classes?
A. After you’ve downloaded and installed Skype, you’ll also have to register an account with http://skype.com. The software and
registration is free. Once you have your account set up, execute the Skype program and sign in—via the program not the web—and
send a request to add CircleOfTheDarkMoon as a contact. When we receive your request, we’ll add you as a contact and add you to
our class group and then on Sundays at 3:00 PM ET, we’ll initiate the call. So what you need to do on Sunday is load Skype, log in
via the program, and wait for a call from CIRCLEOFTHEDARKMOON and then answer it. After that things work pretty much the same
as any other conference call except we’ll be using computers, web cams, microphones, and earphones or speakers.  computers,
web cams, microphones, and earphones or speakers.

Q. Do I need any special hardware to participate in the online classes?
A. Even if you don’t have a web cam, you can still use Skype with just speakers and microphones or a headphone/microphone combo set.

However, we recommend getting a cheap headphone/microphone combination set available at Best Buy or similar stores for around
$40. The reason for that is with headphones, we don’t have the problem of feedback from the PC speakers.

Q. Does it cost anything to use Skype?
A. No, don’t worry about buying Skype credit or any of the other crap they want to sell you. The part of Skype we’re using is a free
service.

Q. How do I set up Skype?
A. You will need to tell Skype what type of microphone/webcam/speakers you’re using. You do that via the options tab on Skype. The
Skype website has fairly good instructions for setting up your hardware. If you’re having real difficulties, contact us and we’ll assist
you.

Q. Anything else?
A. Be sure to register with this forum. The Wytcheboard page is part of the Circle of the Dark Moon web site, and such is where we put
upload class handouts and where you can ask questions of all the members.

Q. What if I want to attend in person classes?
A. Contact us for registration for in person classes.

Queen of Swords (rev)

Trying to find meaning and even demanding that there must be a meaning to what happened to you in the past is a fruitless endeavor.

People in Your Dreams

You smoking marijuana:

Knight of Cups (rev)

Be wary of falling into old habits for doing this could jeopardize future happiness. Or, this could simple be a fear of that happening. You seem to have a lot of emotional baggage from your past.

Your Friend, Amanda:

Queen of Pentacles

Amanda represents a time when you were happier and things seemed simpler and everything made sense. Now, you are feeling very confused and are unsure of what to do.

You & Amanda:

9 of Swords (rev)

Here again, Amanda represents something from your past or a sense of loss. I feel that you are almost nostalgic about something and are desperately trying to regain it. Your heart is crossed and you can’t see your way to solve this problem or resolve some old conflict. Until you are able to do this you will be blocked from true wisdom and emotional calm.

Transition Card (influences Symbols or the Deepest Meanings of your Dreams):

Knight of Pentacles (rev)

You need a rest or currently are in limbo about something. However, don’t hang on to the past too long or spend too much time searching for meaning in your past for your future will require your attention for your future holds abundance or fertility if only you can adapt to your changing environment.

Symbols in Your Dreams

A Wall (appeared twice):

The Devil

You have misplaced blame. Take responsibility for what happened and move forward. You’ve been using these feelings like a wall to prop up a false sense of being a victim thus creating an imbalance in your life. The wall is a barrier you must move through to create a new you.

Castle:

The Emperor

A castle and an emperor or a king appears in your dream. But the emperor like the castle has decayed and fallen into ruin. You have weakened the foundation of your life or perhaps your relationship with a father-figure has deteriorated. You recognize this and wish for more stability in your life.

Shattered Windows in Castle:

The Fool

The Fool represents you and the new beginning and everything before you on a journey to a new life, and all you are hoping for but the broken windows suggest you must first move beyond the shattered halls of your past. While it is good to seek answers about the past the future and present are more important. Make a radical change in your life in the face of conventional wisdom.

Hunger (for Oreos and milk):

Temperance

Seek balance in your life and beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself—cut yourself some slack.

Haunted Buildings:

The Empress

You have some unfinished emotional business with something or someone from your past—possibly your mother or a mother-figure or perhaps even with yourself.

The Past Influences:

The Page of Pentacles (rev)

Carelessness in the past has caused you grief in the present. Pay more attention to practical matters. Seek new challenges or studies and don’t rest on your laurels. Be warned you don’t know as much as you think you do.

The Present Influences:

The World (rev)

You feel as though your world has literally been turned upside down and are languishing. But chaos and change are all part of growth. You lack confidence about your present and it’s not really all that bad. You tend to see the worst possible outcome in every situation.

The Future Influences:

The Mage (rev)

You have all you need at your disposal if only you will start to apply yourself and have a little faith. Continue your studies whether they be a magickal ones or mundane ones at a school. However do not let your blossoming abilities lead you down the path of manipulation and overly controlling others for that is an addiction as bad the other you suffered.

What it all Means:

The Hierophant

Through studies both magickal and mundane you will find what you seek but more importantly to you, you will come through this difficulty. You will learn (so make sure you keep studying), you will find some of the answers your looking for (others you will never know and must accept this as fact), and finally society will accept you and you will find contentment within structures others might find too confining but will make you happy.

Background

This spread was a remote reading for a friend. I’ll refer to her as ‘R’. Typically when asking a question about a situation, I like to use the Celtic Spread. I use the full 78-card deck for readings; therefore, I sometimes yet need to peek at the card interpretations. However, I look at the symbolism on the card and add my own thoughts as well. One must do that otherwise, there would only be a finite number of unique readings possible (albeit still a large number—something like (78! / [number of cards used]) if my memory of statistics serves me.) The deck I currently favor is the Gilded Tarot.

R is a fellow guildmate of the online game I play. She asked me for a reading and I consented, curious to find out how accurate I’d be without being close to the querent. She lives in Texas with her boyfriend who recently lost his job. I also know that things have not been all quiet on the home front.

The cards definitely echo her situation and unfortunately, unless R alters her present course, I don’t see much improvement of her situation. For a card-by-card analysis, see my comments below each card listed.

The Reading

Significator (Self)

The World

This card, usually chosen by the querent represents how they see themselves. Since this was a remote reading, I chose by cut of the cards using my left hand since the left hand represents spiritual matters.

A woman stands atop a pedestal surrounded by a wreath. Her demeanor is proud and confident. She wears a lion mask and her hair is blown back as though it were a mane. She holds in each hand a silver wand. The wand is a symbol of air and intellect. The two wands together suggest mastery of the unconscious and conscious.

R believes that she is captain of her own ship and master of all she surveys. This card could also indicate a victory or a completion of task. But does the reflection in the mirror always tell us the truth?

1. Self (Present Situation)

The Emperor (reversed)

The emperor is a leadership card. In this position and reversed the card indicates that the querent arrived at the present place through some poor judgments or miscalculations. Possibly, because the querent was too stodgy and unwilling to let go of autocratic rules or adhered to strongly to ingrained habits.

2. Self (Immediate Influences)

Five of swords

A man holds aloft a sword in triumph on a battlefield strewn with the dead, dying, and injured. The sword is the symbol of fire and passion.

Was whatever victory R won worth the cost? Sometimes the best battles are those waged in the halls of diplomacy.

With the Significator, this card also suggests that R is at an end of a cycle or period in her life.

3. Self (Recent Influences)

Ace of Cups (reversed)

The cup or chalice is the symbol of feminine nurturing and is of the element water. Water signs such as Cancer are homebody nurturers. The chalice or grail is also a symbol of the depth of universal gifts of romance, love, and idealism.

Because this card is reversed, (the cup is upside down and hence emptied), it means that R’s journey for whatever this particular grail stands for is at an end and combined with the previous card’s influence it would indicate possible dissatisfaction with a quest’s result.

Whatever R was looking for, she didn’t find it or it wasn’t worth the price she paid. The moon phases depicted above the cup, again point to feminine influences but since they are ‘below’ the reversed cup it could mean that the moon’s pull is at a low ebb as are R’s feelings. She must feel as though the bounty of the universal grail’s gifts have all ‘run out’ on her.

4. Self (Past Influences)

Four of Cups (reversed)

This card echoes the negative side of the Emperor and in conjunction with the previous card indicates that R may be seeking an ideal that does not exist. She ignores what has been laid at her feet while following an internal dogma that dictates that something better is out there but she’s not exactly sure what it is. This is a negative manifestation of the truism that the grass is always greener…

5. Self (Possible Goal or Outcome)

The Sun (reversed)

This card is never negative—even when reversed. Reversal merely diminishes the Sun’s effect. The sun is pictured above a zodiac circle with Jupiter and Saturn figured prominently. The other planets in the orbits are also pictured.

It’s important to this reading that Jupiter is pictured since R is currently under some financial distress and Jupiter is generous and expansive when it comes to money matters.

If Jupiter is expansive, then Saturn is restrictive. Saturn is the astrological taskmaster that admonishes us to knuckled down and get to work.

As a possible goal or destination, and in combination with the previous card, I’d say that with a little hard work, R can reverse her economic misfortunes but maybe not to the degree she’d like.

6. Self (Future Influences)

Two of Pentacles (reversed)

The two of pentacles shows a man effortlessly balancing two pentacles. This card relates to having mastery and balance in one’s life—especially where work is concerned. As I see it R is lacking in this balance. The ship and the dolphin in the background of the card indicates travel. I see R moving to some place where she can achieve balance in work and home life.

7. Fears

The Lovers (reversed)

This card is not always about relationships. Actually, it deals more with choices. The original card depicted a man choosing between two women.

However, in R’s case, I think it is about a relationship. In the fears position, this card tells us that her biggest fear is damage to their relationship because of economic turmoil or decisions they’ve made in the past.

8. Outside Influences

Three of Pentacles (reversed)

The three of pentacles is about career and pride in workmanship. R feels unappreciated or at least under appreciated in her job. This card shows a craftsman admiring his work. He takes delight and joy in his work or his creation. I feel that R has lost this joy in her work and needs to try to recapture that feeling or move on to something else.

9. Hopes and Ideals

Eight of Swords

A maiden (appropriate since R is female—this goes double for the Significator card) blindfolded, and bound is surrounded by eight swords. This would seem a predicament for most people, but the maiden exhibits a calm, if not confident air.

If the Significator shows how the querent views themselves, then, this card shows the reality of that perception. In this case we have a match between self-perception and reality. If only R can find it within herself to let go of past influences, unrealistic expectations, and yes even a stubborn clinging to romantic ideals which can never come to fruition, she’ll soon find her bonds broken.

10. Outcome

Four of Pentacles (reversed)

The four of pentacles (pentacles are an Earth suit concerned with career, wealth, and possessions) is an extreme or intensifier of the Emperor (which was drawn for the present position card.) When the emperor (in the upright position) provide authority and order for the betterment of life, all is well. However, when reversed, as is the case for this reading, it is merely order for orders sake.

Rather than a warning about an impending financial loss (that’s already occurred), the card seems to echo the Three of Pentacles drawn in the outside influences position. This draw reinforces the fact that R has lost sight of the fact that money / jobs are mere abstractions and only a means not an end. Also she should not be so fixated on current financial difficulties as to miss some opportunities (remember the Sun drawn in possible outcome position?) that will present themselves. She just needs to be flexible enough to recognize these opportunities and open to taking an unexpected (or even unwanted) path.

Overall Analysis

Since at least four major arcana cards were drawn for this reading, that fact indicates strong forces are at work.

The preponderance of pentacle and cups cards drawn is also interesting. These cards indicate trouble at home and at work and or trouble with financial matters. Moreover, since there is actually a run of cards from the pentacles suite (two, three, and four) However, with a little hard work, these difficulties can be overcome.

Another bit of good news for R is that while she may still hold some unrealistic expectations (Three of Cups and Five of Swords) her basic perceptions of herself are spot on as indicated by the Significator, and Eight of Swords. She is a strong and confident person and if she can marshal the strength necessary to change her current course then her situation will improve.
