Dark Moon of The

First-Degree Initiation

4 December 2010

Circle of the Dark Moon

Coven

You will need these items:

  • The usual tools, candles, paraphernalia for ritual

Items specific to the Ritual

  • Blindfold
  • A length of twine/rope at least 8 feet long
  • Anointing Oil
  • Hand bell
  • 3 lengths of red cord (1 of 9 feet and 2 of 4 feet 6 inches)
  • A scourge
  • A boline

Preparation:

Cleansing Sacred Space

Sweep the area with besom then smudge with violet-sage.

Cleansing Sacred Space

(Maiden sweeps—with circular widdershins motions—widdershins about the ritual area.
When she is satisfied that enough negativity has been removed she sets the besom aside. Next, she lights the black crone/resolutions candle.
Finally, the maiden checks the layout of the altar making sure that the black candle is at
least near the cauldron.

Except for the above mentioned exceptions, the maiden ensures that the altar should be
divided between male objects on the right—God candle, censer, salt dish, HP’s
athame/sword/wand, and besom— and female objects on the left—Goddess candle,

cauldron, bowl of water, chalice, libation plate (if used), bell, and the HPS’ athame/wand/sword. The pentacle should be placed forward and between the Goddess and God candles.

The maiden also ensures that the chalice is filled and the ‘cakes’ are on the plate. When these tasks are completed, she assists the HPS in any other way deemed necessary. )

Call to the Circle

HPS: (Rings bell to call everyone to the circle.)

HPS: This time is not a time; this place is not a place; today is not a day;

and this night is not a night. I stand at the threshold between the worlds. I stand ready to part the veil of mysteries may the Ancient Ones help and protect us on this mighty journey.

Blessed be.

Coveners: So mote it be.

Consecration of the Elements

Charge at the Pentacle

(HP and HP kneel before the altar. The HP is on the right. Both of them place their right hands upon the pentacle. After a moment, they rise.)

Blessing the Salt

HPS: (places dish of salt upon the pentacle)
HPS: I consecrate thee O creature of salt from the Earth,
magickal aid, and seasoning for Hecate’s black cauldron upon the
hearth.

I cast from thee all hindrance and malignity, so that in my works of magick you may well serve me.

(HPS removes the dish of salt from the pentacle and then places the dish of water upon the pentacle. Then she takes the salt and using her athame drops into the water three measures of salt. She stirs the water three times with the tip of her athame. HPS sets the salt aside.)

Blessing the Water

HPS: I consecrate thee O creature of water—dark bubbles in the
cauldron of rebirth—life giving, whether swiftly flowing or falling
from the firmament.
I cast from thee all hindrance and malignity, so that in my works of
magick you may well serve me.
All: So mote it be.

Blessing the Air

(HP places the censer containing incense upon the pentacle)

HP: I consecrate thee O creature of Air—force of the dark moon that

brings the imagination to dare.

I cast from thee all hindrance and malignity, so that in my works of
magick you may well serve me.

All: So mote it be.

Blessing the Fire

(HP lights the incense)

HP: I consecrate thee O creature of Fire—force of Magick’s pyre.

I cast from thee all hindrance and malignity, so that in my works of magick you may well serve me.

All: So mote it be.

(HP sets the censer aside.)

Circle Casting

By Earth

(HP holds the scabbard while the HPS draws the sword. HPS and HP proceed around the circle. While walking about the circle, HPS holds sword pointed at the perimeter. )

HPS: (Traces the about the circle with her athame or sword. If “increasing magick” is to be done she walks deosil about the circle otherwise she travels widdershins if banishing magick is being performed.)

HPS: I conjure thee, O Circle of Power to be a meeting place of love, joy and truth:

A boundary between the worlds of men and the Realms of the Mighty Ones.

This magick circle is both a rampart and protection against all wickedness that shall both contain and entertain the powers that shall be raised within.

Wherefore do I consecrate thee in the name of Lugh and Hecate.

Strengthening the Circle

By Water

Witch 1: Rain of water and salt sprinkled upon the ground,

Protect us from wickedness, and make our magick sound.

(Sprinkles the salt and water mixture around the circle)

By Air

Witch 2: Into the night sky, incense smoke, roil, rise, and writhe,

Sunder us from the mundane like a scythe.

(Takes incense around circle)

By Fire

Witch 3: Fire, shine true and bright,

Aid, grant clarity of sight,

Mayest the Gods be with us this night.

(Takes candle around circle)

Calling the Quarters

Note: if the coven plans to perform “increasing magick,” the quarters should be called in usual deosil order of East, South, West, and then North.

However, if the coven plans don’t include a working, or banishing magick is being performed, then, the quarters should be called in widdershins order of East, North, West, and then South. For the purposes of this document, the quarters will be presented in traditional dark moon widdershins order.

The Individual quarter calls themselves are presented on separate pages for ease of changing calling order. Page numbers have also been removed on the quarter call pages so that all one needs to do is reorder the pages to correctly reflect the type of magick being performed during the ritual.

East: Hail and welcome ye Sylphs of the Airs and realms of the Atmosphere,

I do summon, stir, and call you up.

Bring with you the hosts of the watchtowers of the East

to guard our circle and to witness our rites.

Sylphs, thou art the gatekeepers of the Eastern Portals of Knowledge and Intellect.

(Draw the invoking pentagram of Air)

South: Hail and welcome ye Salamanders from your realms of Fire,

I do summon, stir, and call you up.

Bring with you the hosts of the watchtowers of the South

to guard our circle and to witness our rites.

Salamanders, thou art the gatekeepers of the Southern Portal.

(Draw the invoking pentagram of Fire)

West: Hail and welcome ye Undines of the Waters,

I do summon, stir, and call you up.

Bring with you the hosts of the watchtowers of the West

to guard our circle and to witness our rites.

Undines, thou art the gatekeepers of the Western Portals to Death and Initiation.

(Draw the invoking pentagram of Water)

North: Hail and welcome ye Gnomes, Dwarves, and Trolls of the Earthen Realms,

I do summon, stir, and call you up.

Bring with you the hosts of the watchtowers of the North

to guard our circle and to witness our rites.

Gnomes, Dwarves, and Trolls thou art the gatekeepers of the Northern Portal of Boreas.

(Draw the invoking pentagram of Earth)

Drawing Down the Dark Moon

Invocation to the Dark Goddess

(HPS & HPS return to the altar)

HPS : (Assumes the Goddess position)

I invoke thee and call upon thee, Dark Mother of us all.
Thy names are too numerous to tell: Hecate, Artemis, Lilith, and the
Queen of Hell.

Protector of witches, within the darkness you are the light.
At the crossroads, I await thee; please heed my call.
O Hecate, be with me on this dark moon night.

Where the veil is thinnest, new beginnings begun, and banishments done,
you teach us the mysteries on the dark moon night.
Mistress of all sorceries, to those brave enough, you grant the sight.
O Hecate, please come unto me; grant me your wisdom’s might.

(HPS lights the Goddess Candle)

(HP stands before the HPS)

HPS: (draws invoking pentagram before the HP)

Of the Mother darksome and divine,
Mine is the scourge and mine is the kiss;
The five-point star of love and bliss-
Here I charge you, in this sign.

(HP: stands aside)

The Charge of the Dark Goddess

HP: Listen to the words of the Dark Mother, who of old was called Hecate, Nuit, Morrigan, Banba, Erda, Macha, MotherNight, Sekhmet and many other names.

HPS: Whenever you seek wisdom, at the time of the Darkening Moon, come together in love and trust and learn of Me, who am the Wisest of Crones. You who search the mysteries of the Earth, the secrets of air and darkness, of blood and fire, the silence of the uttermost stars, come unto me, and I shall whisper to you in the depths of midnight.

You shall approach Me in silence, and as a sign that you are free from fear, your breast shall bare to My blade, for fear has no place in My mysteries, and that which you seek of me will destroy you if you fear it.

For I am the dolmen arch beyond which stretch the mysteries of infinity. I am the silence before birth and after death. I am the clouded mirror in which you scry your own soul. I am mist in the twilight, the vast and starry sky of midnight, shadows on the Moon. All things come to Me in the end, and yet I am the beginning of all. I meet you at the crossroads; I lead you through the darkness, my hand you grasp in the passage between the worlds. To those that toy with Me, I am an instrument of self-destruction. Yet to the true seeker do I bring knowledge beyond mortal comprehension.

Of you shall I demand the utter truth of all that you are, and in return shall I give you all that you may be, all that I am. For My wisdom is beyond the Ages, and knowledge of My secrets is power over self, over fear, over death. Nor do I demand aught of you, which you cannot give. For I am the Mother of Mysteries, and as you know Me so shall you learn to know yourself.

Drawing Down the Sun

Invocation to the Dark God

HP: I invoke thee and call upon thee, Dark Father of us all.

Thy names are too numerous to tell: Anubis, Osiris, Hades,
Cernunnos, Lugh, and the Lord of the Underworld.

To men lost in the dark you provide you provide succor and light.
At the crossroads of Worlds I await thee; please heed my call.
O Dark Father, be with me on this dark moon night.

Where the veil is thinnest, new beginnings begun, and bindings
and banishments done,
you teach us the mysteries and how all are connected as though
one.

Master of the dark moon night, for those brave enough you banish
sleep and grant the sight.

O Lugh please come unto me at this dark moon night and grant me
your wisdom’s might.

(HPS: stands before the HP)

(HP: lights the God Candle)

HP: (draws invoking pentagram before the HPS)

HP: I am the stag of seven tines, Lord of the Underworld, darksome, and divine, Mine is the realm of shadow sublime. Mine is the scourge and mine is the kiss; The five-point star of love and bliss- Here I charge you, in this sign.

(HPS: stands aside)

Charge of the Dark God

(HP assumes the Osiris position with his back to the coven.)

HPS: Listen to the words of the Dark God, who was of old called Donn,

Anubis, Hades by many

other names:

HP : I am the shadow in the bright day, I am the reminder of mortality at the height of living.

I am the never-ending veil of Night where the Star Goddess dances.

I am the Death that must be so that Life may continue, for behold, Life is immortal because the living must die.

I am the strength that protects, that limits; I am the power that says No, and NO further, and That Is Enough. I am the things that cannot be spoken of, and I am the laughter at the edge of Death.

Come with me into the warm enfolding dark; feel my caresses in the hands, in the mouth, in the body of one you love, and be transformed.

Gather in the moonless night and speak in unknown tongues; the Dark Mother and I will listen. Sing to us, and cry out, and the Power will be yours to wield.

Blow me a kiss when the sky is dark, and I will smile, but no kiss return, for my kiss is the final one for all mortal flesh.

HPS & HP: Akhera goti—akhera beiti

Statement of Purpose

HP/HPS: The dark moon is a time for beginnings and endings. Tonight, our dedicants have reached childhood’s end and are ready to be reborn as first-degree witches.

Blessed be.

Power Raising

(HPS and HP lead any others in the New Moon Rune)

Dark Moon Rune

Meditate upon the waxing of the moon.
According to Celtic tradition,
from new to full the waxing of Lady Lune,
is a time of inner transformation.

In the dark, listen to the heightened light.
Your awareness soars—your soul’s voice so bright.
Meditate on the moon and not on this rhyme.
During the waxing moon, spend five minutes time.

See Hecate, Lady of the new moon,
Come to assist you and offer a boon.
At the witching hour when her magick peaks,
Channel her wisdom and hear your soul speak.

The Initiation

Initiator: O thou who standest at the threshold between the pleasant world of the mundane and the magickal domain of the Lords and Ladies of the Outer Planes. Hast thou the courage to make the journey to make the crossing?

Initiator: (Places the point of the athame against the postulant’s heart)

For I say verily, it would be better for you to rush upon my blade and seek death than to enter herein with fear in your heart.

Postulant: I have two passwords: perfect love and perfect trust.

Initiator: All who have such are doubly welcome. I now give thee a third password to pass through this dread doorway.

(Lays down the athame and kisses the postulant on the cheek. The initiator then goes behind the postulant and pushes them into the circle.)

HPS: (seals the doorway)

Initiator: (leads the postulant to the eastern quarter)

Take heed ye Mighty Ones, Eastern Spirits of Air that Postulant name is properly prepared to be initiated as priestess and witch.

Eko Eko Azarak
Eko Eko Zomelak

Eko Eko Azarak
Eko Eko Zomelak

Eko Eko Lugh

Eko Eko Hecate

(Initiator signals the coveners to return to their places)

Initiator: In other religions, the postulant kneels while the priest towers over them. But in the Arts Magickal we are taught to serve first, and be humble and welcome the newcomer.

Five-fold Kiss

Initiator:
(administers the five-fold kiss—right foot, left foot, right knee, left knee, womb, right breast, left breast and lips)

Blessed be thy feet, that have brought me in these ways.

Blessed be thy knees, that shall kneel at the sacred altar.

Blessed be thy womb/penis, without which we would not be.

Blessed be thy breasts, formed in beauty/strength.

Blessed be thy lips, which shall utter the sacred names.

Taking of the Measure

Initiator: Now we are going to take your measure.

HPS: (HPS takes the measure of the postulant with the twine or ribbon. First, she measures from feet to crown and cuts off that length. Then using the cut length, measures around the forehead of the postulant and ties a knot in the length. Next the HPS measures around the heart and ties a knot in the measure to mark it. Finally, the HPS measures around the hips and marks that measurement with a knot.

When she’s finished the HPS winds up the measure and lays it on the altar.)

The Test

Initiator: Before thou art sworn, art thou ready to pass the ordeal and suffer for the knowledge?

Postulant: I am.

HPS: (Helps the postulant to kneel and lower their head. She then loosens and removes the leg bindings. She then ties the postulant’s knees and ankles together. Next, the HPS fetches the scourge from the altar.)

HPS: (rings the bell 3 times)

Three.

Initiator: (scourges the postulant with 3 light strokes.)

HPS: Seven.

Initiator: (scourges the postulant with 7 light strokes.)

HPS: Nine.

Initiator: (scourges the postulant with 9 light strokes.)

HPS: Twenty-one.

Initiator: (scourges the postulant with 21 light strokes.)

Initiator: Thou hast bravely passed the test. Are you ready to swear that thou wilt always be true to the Arts?

Postulant: I am.

The Oath

Initiator: Art thou ready to always help, protect, and defend thy brothers and sisters of the Arts?

Postulant: I am.

Initiator: Then repeat after me phrase by phrase.

I, Postulant name, in the presence of the Elder Gods do of my own free will and accord, and without reservation,

most solemnly swear, that I will ever keep secret what I’m asked to keep secret, and never reveal, the secrets of the Arts Magickal, except it be to a proper person, properly prepared within a Circle such as I am in now;

And, that I will never deny the secrets to such a person if he or she be properly vouched for by a brother or sister of the Art.

That I will learn to master the Art Magical; but ever remember the rune: “What good be the tools without the inner light? What good be magick without wisdom’s sight?”

That in due course I will strive to find a worthy pupil in magick, to whom in future years I can hand down the knowledge I acquire.

That I will never use the Art Magickal merely to impress foolish persons. Nor shall I invoke magick for any wrongful end.

That I will help the Craft of the Wise, and hold its honor as I would my own.

This I swear before the Elder Gods and those of the Art gathered here and by my hopes of a future life, mindful that my measure has been taken. May my weapons turn against me, and Karma reward me justly should I break this my solemn oath.

Postulant: (repeats each phrase)

HPS: (Helps the postulant to their feet. She then retrieves the anointing oil and the chalice of wine.)

Initiator: (takes a bit of oil)

I hereby sign thee with the Triple Sign. I consecrate thee with oil.

(Touches the postulant above the pubic hair, on the right breast and then the left breast)

(Moistens his lips with a bit of wine)

I consecrate thee with my lips…

(Kisses the postulant in the same places as he/she touched with oil.)

…Priestess and Witch.

HPS: (Removes the postulant’s bindings.)

(Members of the coven now may congratulate the Universe’s newest witch)

Introduction of the Tools

(The Initiator removes each tool from the altar with a kiss and hands it to the new initiate. The initiator explains each tool in turn and when he is finished with an explanation, the initiate gives the tool to HPS who returns it to the altar with a kiss.)

Initiator: First, I present the Magic Sword. With this, as with the athame, thou canst form all Magic Circles, dominate, subdue and punish all rebellious spirits and daemons, and even persuade angels and good spirits. With this in thy hand, thou art ruler of the Circle.

Next, I present the Athame. This is the true witch’s weapon and has all the powers of the Magic Sword.

Next, I present the White-hilted knife. Its use is to form all instruments used in the Art. It can only be used in a Magick Circle.

Next, I present the Wand. Its use is to call up and control certain angels and genii to whom it would not be meet to use the Magick Sword.

Next, I present the Cup. This is the vessel of the Goddess, the Cauldron of Cerridwen, the Holy Grail of Immortality. From this we drink in

Comradeship, and in honor of the Goddess.

Next, I present the Pentacle. This is for the purpose of calling up appropriate spirits.

Next, I present the Scourge. This is the sign of power and domination. It is also used to cause purification and enlightenment. For it is written: “To learn you must suffer and be purified.” Art thou willing to suffer to learn?”

Postulant: I am.

Initiator: Next, and lastly I present the cords. They are of use to bind the Sigils of The Art; also to bind the material basis; also, they are necessary in the Oath.

In the name of Lugh, Cernunnos, Brighid and Hecate, I now salute thee, newly consecrated Witch and Priest/ess of the Goddess.

(Acknowledges this achievement in some way—i.e. handshake, kiss, hug, etc.)

Reintroduction of to the Quarters

Initiator: (leads the postulant to the eastern quarter)

Take heed ye Mighty Ones, Eastern Spirits of Air that postulant name is consecrated as priestess, witch, and hidden child of the Goddess.

(leads the postulant to the southern quarter)

Take heed ye Mighty Ones, Southern Spirits of Fire that postulant name is been consecrated as priestess, witch, and hidden child of the Goddess.

(leads the postulant to the western quarter)

Take heed ye Mighty Ones, Western Spirits of Water that postulant name is been consecrated as priestess, witch, hidden and child of the Goddess.

(leads the postulant to the northern quarter)

Take heed ye Mighty Ones, Northern Spirits of Earth that postulant name is been consecrated as priestess, witch, and hidden child of the Goddess.

Consecration of the Wine and Cakes (Symbolic Great Rite)

The Great Rite (Symbolic)

HP: For in the Days of Old, the Body of Woman was the altar. Come, let us all share the loving cup of the God and the Goddess

(HP holds the blade aloft)

HP: Blade of my heart and my intent Help us all to remember That what is given is received back threefold Help us all to remember To receive as graciously as we give.

HPS: For in the days of Old, the body of Man was the power

Come, let us share the loving cup of the Goddess and the God.

(She holds the chalice aloft)

HPS: Chalice of my heart and my intent

Help us all to remember

That what is received must be given back three times

Help us all to remember

To give as graciously as we receive

HP: As the athame is the male.

HPS: So the Chalice is to the female.

HPS/HP: And the two are conjoined as one in truth.

Consecration of the Wine

HPS: (lays her athame down and places the chalice on the pentacle.)

HPS: May this offering to the God and Goddess keep us from ever knowing thirst.

Consecration of the Cakes

(HP holds the platter of cakes before the HPS. She touches each cake in turn)

HPS: This food is the blessings gods to our bodies. Let us Partake of it freely. And, as we share, let us remember always to see to it that aught that we have we share with those who have nothing.

Cakes and Ale

Note: the ceremony of Cakes and Ales now proceeds according to the HPS’ wishes: either the plate and chalice is passed from covener to covener and they serve themselves or each other according to coven custom or the HPS and HP proceed from covener to covener serving them and finally each other.

HPS: (When all of the coveners have partaken of the simple feast, the HPS places some food and drink in the libation bowl. HPS raises the libation plate in salute.)

HPS: To the Gods.

Coveners: To the Gods.

Closing the Circle

Release of Deities

Release of the Goddess

HPS: (faces the altar, assumes the Goddess position—or alternatively salutes with athame—and recites)

Hecate, Queen of all Sorceries,
Your magick, terrible to behold, thou art cloaked in the mysteries,
On this dark moon night,
You have taught us that even in the Underworld there is light.
Past the crossroads, beneath the moonless dolmen arch,
Protector of witches, you walk with us along path of wisdom’s start.

For this boon, and glimpse
Of your magick, and mystery,
We salute and thank Thee.

Alas, our time together now is past.
We bid thee farewell.

Stay if you will and join our repast;
Leave us if you must.
Ere you leave us, know that all who met here
Did so in perfect love and perfect trust.

(Extinguishes the Goddess candle)

Release of the God

HP: (Assumes the Osiris position)

Thou art the Stag of Seven tines.
He who’s power is wide as the flood on a plain.
Your wisdom stretches like a hawk across the sky.
Who but you with smoke sets our heads afire?
You taught us the secrets of the unhewn dolmen.

For this boon, and glimpse
Of your magick, and mystery,
We salute and thank Thee.

Alas, our time together now is past.
We bid thee farewell.
Stay if you will and join our repast;
Leave us if you must.
Ere you leave us, know that all who met here
Did so in perfect love and perfect trust.

Quarter Dismissals

(The HP follows the HPS around the quarters—except where noted—while the rest of the coven remain in place around the circle but mimic the HPS’ gestures. At each quarter, the HPS and HP salute the quarter with their athames. After the dismissal, the HPS, HP, and coveners, draw the banishing pentagram.)

North: Hail, Gnomes, Dwarves, and Trolls who toil in rock and dirt, on this Dark Moon night, we thank you for witnessing and protecting these sacred magickal rites.

Lead the hosts of the Watchtowers of the North and return to your Realms of Earth, Borean snow and ice.

(Draw the banishing pentagram of Earth)

West: Hail, Undines of the Rivers, Lakes, and Seas, on this Dark Moon night,

we thank you for witnessing and protecting these sacred magickal rites.

Lead the hosts of the Watchtowers of the West and return to your Realms of Water.

(Draw the banishing pentagram of Water)

South: Hail, Salamanders of heat and light, on this Dark Moon night,

we thank you for witnessing and protecting these sacred magickal rites.

Lead the hosts of the Watchtowers of South and return to your Realms of Lava, Heat, and Fire.

(Draw the banishing pentagram of Fire)

East: Hail, Sylphs of the atmospheres, on this Dark Moon night,

we thank you for witnessing and protecting these sacred magickal rites.

Lead the hosts of the Watchtowers of East and return to your Realms of Air.

(Draw the banishing pentagram of Air)

Grounding the Circle

(HPS and HP face the altar together. The Deities have been thanked and the Quarters dismissed, therefore, the next action is to ‘take down’ the circle. Since the circle was thrice cast, it should be thrice unwound. Also, because the circle was cast doesil it should be undone in a widdershins direction.

An Athame or sword may be used; but I prefer the sword for reasons you shall see later. Assuming it was the HPS who cast the circle, we’ll let her undo it.)

(HP holds the scabbard while the HPS draws the sword. HPS and HP proceed around the circle. While walking about the circle, HPS holds sword pointed at the perimeter.)

HPS: O Circle of Power, as I have conjured thee I now release thy energies into this blade.

(In your mind’s eye, see the circle dissolve into a wispy energy smoke, which the glowing blade readily absorbs)

Where there once existed a rampart between this world and the Otherworld, the rampart is no more. Once again, our realms are separate. However, the love and joy with which we met here tonight remains undiminished.

(When three widdershins circuits have been completed, the HP remains at the altar while the HPS walks to the center of the circle and grounds the sword—this is why I said that I prefer using a sword.)

HPS: This energy I return unto Mother Earth. May it help assuage her hurts in some small fashion.

(HPS rejoins the HP at the altar and then together they face the rest of the coven)

HPS: The circle is open but remains unbroken. Brothers and sisters, we are children of the Lord and Lady. May they always live within our

hearts, our magick, and our lives. Merry did we meet, and merry do we part. Merry may we meet again.

Blessed be.

Coveners: Blessed be.

Following is a Dark Moon ritual written by one of our second-degree students. This ritual was performed by our coven on October 7th, 2010.

Next, she lights the white Full Moon Mother Candle.

Finally, the maiden checks the layout of the altar making sure that the altar is divided between male objects on the right – God Candle, censer, incense, HP’s athame/sword/wand, and besom – and female objects on the left- Goddess Candle, cauldron, bowl of water, bowl of salt, chalice, libation plate, bell, and the HPS’ athame/sword/wand.  The pentacle should be placed forward and between the Goddess and God Candles.  The maiden also ensures that the chalice is filled and the “cakes” are on the plate.  When these tasks are completed, she assists the HPS in any other way deemed necessary.)

Attunement

All:

Oh, Great Spirit, whose voice I hear in the wind,

Whose breath gives life to all the world.

Hear me; I need your strength and wisdom.

Let me walk in beauty, and make my eyes ever behold the red and purple sunset.

Make my hands respect the things you have made and my ears sharp to hear your voice

Make me wise so that I may understand the things you have taught my people.

Help me to remain calm and strong in the face of all that comes towards me.

Let me learn the lessons you have hidden in every leaf and rock.

Help me seek pure thoughts and act with the intention of helping others.

Help me find compassion without empathy overwhelming me.

I seek strength, not to be greater than my brother, but to fight my greatest enemy

Myself.

Make me always ready to come to you with clean hands and straight eyes.

So when life fades, as the fading sunset, my spirit may come to you without shame.

Charge at the Pentacle

(HPS and HP stand before the altar, the HP is on the right and the HPS is on the left.  Both of them place their right hands on the pentacle, asking the Goddess and the God for strength, wisdom, and guidance.)

All: So mote it be!

(HPS removes the dish of salt from the pentacle and then places the dish of water upon the pentacle.  Then she takes the salt, and using her athame, drops into the water three measures of salt.  She stirs the water three times with the tip of her athame.  HPS sets the salt aside.)

(Draw the invoking pentagram of Air.)

Drawing Down the Moon

Invocation to the Goddess

(HPS assumes the Goddess position.)

HPS: I invoke thee and call upon thee, Mother Earth, bringer of light, the Triple Goddess, Hecate.

On this New Moon Night we celebrate you and the gathering in of the harvest.

Hecate, please come unto me with your light, and grant me your wisdom’s might.

(HPS lights the Goddess Candle.)

(HP stands before the HPS.  HPS draws the invoking pentagram before the HP.)

HPS: Of the Mother, darksome and divine,

Mine is the scourge and mine is the kiss;

The five-point star of love and bliss-

Here I charge you in this sign.

(HP stands aside.)

Charge of the Goddess

HP: Now listen to the words of the Great Mother,  who was of old also called among men Artemis, Astarte, Athene, Dione, Melusine,       Aphrodite, Cerridwen, Dana, Arianrhod, Isis, Bride, and by many other      names.

HPS: Whenever ye have need of anything, once in the month, and better it be when the moon is full, then shall ye assemble in some secret place, and adore the spirit of me, who am Queen of all witches.

There shall ye assemble, ye who are fain to learn all sorcery, yet have not won its deepest secrets; to these I will teach things that are as yet unknown.

And ye shall be free from slavery; and as a sign that ye be really free, ye shall be naked in your rites; and ye shall dance, sing, feast, make music and love, all in my praise.  For mine is the ecstasy of the spirit, and mine also is joy on Earth; for my law is love unto all beings.

Keep pure your highest ideal; strive ever towards it, let naught stop you    or turn you aside; for mine is the secret door which opens upon the land of  youth, and mine is the cup of wine of life, and the cauldron of Cerridwen, which is the Holy Grail of immortality.

I am the gracious Goddess, who gives the gift of joy unto the heart of man.  Upon Earth, I give the knowledge of the spirit eternal; and beyond death, I give peace, and freedom, and reunion with those who have gone before.

Nor do I demand sacrifice; for behold, I am the Mother of all living, and my love is poured out upon the Earth.

HP: Hear ye the words of the Star Goddess: she is the dust of whose feet are the hosts of heaven, whose body encircles the universe.

HPS: I who am the beauty of the green earth and the white moon upon the mysteries of the waters, I call upon your soul to arise and come unto me.

For I am the soul of nature that gives life to the universe, from me all things proceed and unto me they must return.  Let my worship be in the heart that rejoices, for behold, all acts of love and pleasure are My rituals.

Let there be beauty and strength, power and compassion, honor and humility, mirth and reverence within you.  And you who seek to know me, know that the seeking and yearning will avail you not, unless you know the Mystery:  for if that which you seek, you find not within yourself, you will never find it without.

For behold, I have been with you from the beginning, and I am that which is attained at the end of desire.

Drawing Down the Sun

Invocation to the God

(HP assumes the God position.)

HP: I invoke thee and call upon thee, Father Sky, Lord of the Sun, Lugh.

Keeper of the harvest and guardian of the gates of Death, we celebrate you this New Moon night.

O Lugh, please come unto me, and grant me your wisdom’s might.

(HP lights the God Candle.)

(HPS stands before the HP.  HP draws the invoking pentagram before the HPS.)

HP: I am the stag of seven tines,

Lord of the Underworld, darksome and divine,

Mine is the realm of shadow sublime.

Mine is the scourge and mine is the kiss,

The five-point star of love and bliss-

Here I charge you in this sign.

(HPS stands aside.)

Charge of the God

HPS: Listen to the words of the Horned God, the Guardian of all things wild  and free, and the Keeper of the Gates of Death, whose Call all must  heed:

HP: I am the fire within your heart… The yearning of your soul.  I am the Hunter of Knowledge and the Seeker of the Holy Quest;  I who stand in the darkness of light; I am He whom you have called Death.  I am the Consort and Mate of Her whom we adore, call forth to Me.

Heed my call beloved ones, come unto me and learn the secrets of death and peace.  I am the corn at harvest and the fruit on the trees.  I am He   who leads you home.  Scourge and Flame, Blade and Blood, these are mine own gifts to thee.

Call unto me in the forest wild and on hilltop bare and seek me in the Darkness Bright.  I who have been called: Pan, Herne, Osiris, Cernunnos, and Hades, speak to thee in thy search.  Come dance and sing; come live and smile; for behold, this is my worship.

You are My children and I am thy Father.  On swift night wings, it is I who lay you at the Mother’s feet to be reborn and to return again.

Thou who thinks to seek me, know that I am the untamed wind, the fury of storm, and the passion in your soul.  Seek me with pride and humility, but seek me best with love and strength.

For this is my path, and I love not the weak and fearful.  Hear my call on long Winter nights, and we shall stand together guarding Her Earth as She sleeps.

Statement of Purpose

Good Evening and Welcome to our New Moon Ritual.  Tonight we are going to face our fears and magickally rid ourselves of at least one.  Fears are the biggest stumbling block to our spiritual progression.  They inhibit our being able to become the best person we can be.  Overcoming our fears and working towards strengthening ourselves physically, mentally and spiritually is our lifetime goal.  So we are going to go outside and meditate on our greatest personal fear, then we are going to come back in, write it down on a piece of paper and banish it in smoke, fire and ash.

Power Raising

(HPS & HP lead the coven in the Witches Rune)

WITCHES RUNE

Darksome night and shining moon,

Hearken to the witches’ rune.

East then South, West then North,

Here, Come, I call thee forth.

By all the powers of land and sea.

Be obedient unto me.

Wand and Pentacle and Sword,

Hearken ye unto my word,

Cords and Censor, Scourge and Knife,

Waken all ye unto life.

Powers of the Witches’ Blade,

Come ye as the charge is made.

Queen of Heaven, Queen of Hell,

Send your aid unto the spell.

Horned Hunter of the night,

Work my will by magick rite.

By all the powers of land and sea,

As I do say “So mote it be”.

By all the might of Moon and Sun,

As I do, my will be done.

Main Working

Banishing Fear

The HPS opens a door in the Circle for the coven to exit and then closes it from the outside.  The coven proceeds to go outside and choose a spot away from others in the dark to sit and meditate on their fears.  When they have chosen the fear that they wish to banish the coven returns to the Circle.  The HPS opens a door in the Circle, the coven enters and then the HPS closes the door to the Circle again.  The Maiden hands out the pens and pieces of paper.  The members write down the fear they want to banish and folds the paper in quarters. One at a time the coveners light the paper with the Illumination candle, and place it in the cauldron, as they say:

COVENER: With Fire and Flame, Smoke and Air,

Take away the fear I bear.

In its place I see the light,

Return to me the power of might.

With Fire and Flame, Smoke and Air,

Take away the fear I bear.

In its place I see the light.

Return to me the power of might.

With Fire and Flame, Smoke and Air,

Take away the fear I bear.

In its place I see the light,

Return to me the power of might.

The Great Rite (symbolic)

(HPS takes the Chalice and the HP stands before her holding his athame over the chalice.)

HPS: You are the Spear of Lugh.

(HP lowers his athame into the chalice.)

HP: You are the Goddess of the Moon.

HPS/HP: And together we are one.

Consecration of the Wine and Cakes

(HPS places the chalice on the pentacle and lowers her athame into it while saying…)

HPS: May this offering to the God and Goddess keep us from ever knowing thirst.

(HPS removes the chalice and replaces it with the libation plate.  Touching the cakes with her athame she says…)

HPS: May this offering to the God and Goddess keep us from ever knowing hunger.

Simple Feast

(HPS takes the plate of cakes, HP takes the chalice.  They serve each covener and then each other using the following words and responses.)

HPS: May you never know hunger.

Covener: Blessed Be!

HP: May you never know thirst.

Covener: Blessed Be!

(When everyone has been served the HPS places the cakes that are left into the chalice with the wine.  HPS raises the chalice in both hands, saying…)

HPS: To the Gods!

All: To the Gods!

Closing the Circle

Release of the Goddess

(HPS faces the altar.)

HPS: Hecate, Mother of the Earth,

Triple Goddess, our time with you has passed too soon.

We thank you for the blessings of this night,

For friends and mentors, who show us the light.

For all that You are,

For all that we may one day be,

We salute and thank Thee.

Alas, our time together now is past,

We bid thee farewell.

Stay if you will and join our repast.

Leave us if you must.

Ere you leave us, know that all who met here

Did so in perfect love and perfect trust.

(HPS extinguishes the Goddess Candle.)

Release of the God

(HP faces the altar.)

HP: Lugh, Father of the Sky,

Mate of she who lights our night, our time with you has passed too soon.

We thank you for the blessings of this night,

For your guidance and strength, and your wisdom’s might.

(HP extinguishes the God Candle.)

Merry we met, merry we  part, and merry may we meet again.

(Draw the banishing pentagram of Fire.)

Merry we met, merry we  part, and merry may we meet again.

(Draw the banishing pentagram of Water.)

North:   Hail, Tortoise, Guardian of the North, we thank you for witnessing and protecting our Circle on this New Moon night.

Merry we met, merry we  part, and merry may we meet again.

East:   Hail, Hawk, Guardian of the East.  We thank you for witnessing and protecting our Circle on this New Moon night.

Merry we met, merry we  part, and merry may we meet again.

(Draw the banishing pentagram of Air.)

Opening the Circle

(HPS walks around the Circle widdershins three times while saying the following words.)

HPS: O Circle of Power, as I have conjured thee; I now release your energies  into this blade.

Where there was once a rampart between this world and the Otherworld, the rampart is no more.  Once again, our realms are separate.  However, the love and joy with which we met here tonight remains undiminished.

(HPS grounds the energy from the athame into the Earth and then rejoins the HP at the altar.)

HPS: As the Night gives way to Day,

As the Winter Must yield to Spring,

As Youth must turn to Age,

And as the Magickal returns to the Mundane,

So must tonight’s ritual come to an end.

We met here tonight in love and joy,

Take that love and joy with you when you depart.

May you always walk in Beauty.

The Circle is open but remains unbroken.

Blessed Be!

All: Blessed Be!

Manifestation to the visible?

The below journal entry is from our historical archives, circa March 2008, at the Circle of the Dark Moon Coven & School of Wicca, Wytchecraft, and Magick.

“The full moon last night overshadowed by a total lunar eclipse combined to make a magickal night. The Goddess through the Moon showed all three of Her aspects, but the two aspects most prominent were the bright fullness of motherhood, and the wisdom of the dark crone.

I was still in Ohio, so my wife and high priestess, Kris conducted ritual for the coven in our home. I was planning to just do a meditation, but Kris “guilted” me into doing the ritual solo in my apartment.

I began ritual around the time the eclipse started and completed it at about halfway to totality. After a short call from Kris informing me that her ritual had gone well, I went outside to perform another drawing down of the moon.

While outside, something made me look upward, and when I did, I saw, centered over my apartment building, a phosphorescent orange glow reminiscent of a monochromatic aurora borealis. There were four distinct areas of glowing amorphous energy stationary over where I had just dismissed the watchtowers (quarter guardians) from my ritual space. Or perhaps they were other entities who had been attracted by the cone of energy generated by my ritual magick circle.

When considering this magickal phenomenon a few facts are important to remember.

  • It was a cloudless night. Therefore, the orange glowing areas could not have been reflected city lights from low clouds.
  • There were no reports of auroras in the area for that night (I checked—besides March is a bit late for that kind of activity in those Ohioan latitudes.
  • In fact, there were no reports at all of anomalous weather activity of any kind in the Akron area.
  • There were no UFO reports or reports of any strange lights or anything strange at all in the night sky over Akron by any news agency, local UFO clubs, or amateur astronomers.
  • Everyone I asked, said they had not seen any strange lights in the sky that night. Perhaps these beings of light were only visible to me.
  • While I was in the presence of these lights, I felt an outpouring of empathy, compassion, love, and happiness and the source came from those lights.

Therefore, I am left with the following conclusion that what I witnessed were Luminaria (Beings of Light—BOLs) that had been attracted by the ritual occult energy created by my sphere of power. What I saw when I looked upward, was the energy of my circle illuminating these beings. On the other hand, perhaps because of the circle energy, these being were able to manifest to the visible. And finally a last possibility remains that it was I who was so affected by the energy from the magick circle, that for a short space of time I was able to see beyond my normal perceptions and thus was able to see these Luminaria.

Entry into Sacred Space

The Challenge

(HPS rings bell three times)

HPS: Attention. Harken for the bell and gather in thy assigned places. Prepare for admission into the circle.

HPS: This time is not a time; this place is not a place; today is not a day; and this night is not a night. I stand at the threshold between the worlds. I stand ready to part the veil of mysteries. May the Ancient Ones help and protect us on our journey.

Blessed be.

Coveners: So mote it be.

HPS: (Challenges each covener by pointing her athame against their breast)

Better, you should run thyself through on mine blade than to enter here with malignity or fear in your heart. What say you? How dost thou come here?

Covener: In perfect love and perfect trust.

HPS: (Admits covener into the circle)

HP: (After being admitted into sacred space, the covener approaches the HP who then smudges the covener with sage or lavender. When this action is completed, the covener moves to their place about the altar.)

Attunement

HPS: This is an exercise which shall help us to combine and harmonize our energies. It is simplified version of the middle pillar exercise from Qaballistic ceremonial magick.

Stand relaxed but upright with your spine straight.

Inhale, then exhale.

Visualize the energy of the moon as bright while stream of light shining down upon your head

Begin to breathe in slowly to a count of three; hold this breath for a count of three, and then slowly exhale to a count of three. Then hold at the bottom for a count of three and then begin again.

While you are breathing, pull this light energy into your body. Let the light fill you until you are translucent and fairly glowing. Then let the light go and sink into the ground at your feet.

Let’s do this visualization for a total of three breaths.

Now let’s do this again but instead of grounding the energy, let it circulate around your aura in a circle. Visualize this energy coming out of the top of your head and going around the outskirts of your energy field, one stream going to the left and the other stream going to the right. The two streams should reconnect at the feet and enter back into the center of your body.

Let’s do this for three breaths.

Consecration of Water and Salt

Charge at the Pentacle

(HPS and HP with athames over their hearts and the other hand on the pentacle, bend in silence for a moment. During this time, they silently ask the Lord and Lady for strength and guidance.)

Blessing the Salt

HPS: (places dish of salt upon the pentacle)

I consecrate you, creature of salt to service of the Goddess,

Seasoning for magick, element of Earth, added to the waters of rebirth,

Serve us now so that we may complete the Great Work.

I cast from thee all hindrance and malignity,

So that in my works of magick you may well serve me.

All: So mote it be.

(HPS removes the dish of salt from the pentacle and then places the dish of water upon the pentacle. Then she takes the salt and using her athame drops into the water three measures of salt. She stirs the water three times with the tip of her athame. HPS sets the salt aside.)

Blessing the Water

HPS: I consecrate you, creature of water to service of the Goddess.

In this way, recall the seas, the Cauldron of Life, the vessel of our birth and rebirth,

And spring rains which bring life to the earth, aid us now in our works.

I cast from thee all hindrance and malignity,

So that in my works of magick you may well serve me.

All: So mote it be.

Blessing the Air

(HP places the censer containing incense upon the pentacle)

HP: I consecrate thee O creature of Air to service of the God,

Bringer of both spring breezes fair, and March’s changeable weather,

Your power of intellect we call now upon you to share.

I cast from thee all hindrance and malignity, so that in my works of magick you may well serve me.

All: So mote it be.

Blessing the Fire

(HP lights the incense)

HP: I consecrate thee O creature of Fire to the service of the God.

Signifier of the Sun, and light of magick’s pyre,

Burn brightly this spring night so we might know wisdom’s light.

I cast from thee all hindrance and malignity, so that in my works of magick you may well serve me.

All: So mote it be.

(HP sets the censer aside.)

Circle Casting

(by Earth)

HPS: (Addressing the coven)

While we cast the circle, I want all of you to concentrate and focus your energy on erecting the temple. Pull the energy, from the ground, from air, from the moon, from anywhere. Concentrate it within you, and then send it unto the sword or athame, or to me. Sense and see the glow and blue flame from athame tip to ground below and know that when I pass the circle is cast.

(HP and HPS take their athames and trace the sacred circle. If desired, they may leave a doorway in the northeastern quadrant. They walk together with the HP’s hand upon the HPS’ shoulder.)

HPS: I conjure thee, O Circle of Power, to be a meeting place of love, joy, and truth—a boundary between the worlds of men and the Realms of the Mighty Ones, a rampart and Protection against all wickedness that shall both contain and entertain the powers raised within. Wherefore do I consecrate thee in the name of Cenarius, the Lord of the spring Sun and Elune, the Lady of the Moon.

Strengthening the Circle

(by Water)

(Witch 1: Sprinkles the salt and water mixture around the circle)

Witch 1: Rain of water and salt sprinkled upon the ground,

This blessed water sprinkled round, and round.

Protect us from wickedness and make our magick sound.

(Witch 1: When their circuit is completed, they replace the water upon the altar.)

(by Air)

(Witch 2: takes the censer and walks about the circle)

Witch 2: Into the night sky, incense smoke, roil, rise, and writhe,

This smoke takes our intentions to the skies

Sunder us from the mundane like a scythe.

(Witch 2: When their circuit is completed, they replace the censer upon the altar.)

(by Fire)

(Witch 3: takes a candle and walks about the circle)

Drawing down the Moon

Invocation to the Goddess

HPS: (HPS in mortal aspect begins the invocation to the Goddess)

Elune, triune nature’s Queen.

Who walks among the lands between.
From moonless dark of night to spring sunlit day,

You lead Thy children and teach the mysteries of the way.
No man, no elf, nor any other child of Azerothian race,

Denies Thy magick nor Thy ageless grace.

Or takes offense to winter’s cold,

For through Her rest spring is born into summer gold.
So take my hands by crafted light.

Take my arms with cunning might.

Take my voice and be my words.

Take my soul of triple thirds.
Become my flesh and fill my blood.

Infuse my bones with mystic flood.

And speak we two as name’s invoked.

Thy will in me. Thy will evoked.

(HPS is now aspected as the Goddess)

I am Bright Elune, Goddess who brings forth life anew.

From winter slumber in the spring I rise renewed.

Through my voices, my many names are told.
As Tyrandes I hunt as the Earth Mother I hold.
As Fauna, and, Therazane, and Neth,
I am eternal beyond even Death.

Though at times clothed in shadow, I never die,

To teach you the way of the light, I’ll be with you during your magick rites.

The likeness I steal from my Lover, Cenarius, and Son.
His image and death in My eyes are one.

But through My embrace, My children shall rise.
No emerald dream shall enslave. No fate can disguise.
All those among them, the weak and the strong.
The wise and the lost, to Me all belong.

And need Ye to find Me, Ye need only call.
On sabbat or moon, in winter and spring, I listen to all.
My wings are the wind. My blood is the seas.
My womb is the earth. My arms are the trees.

And these Mine own gifts to all I bestow.
Of magick and sight to cure and to grow.
But mark Ye this well when dark aims invade.
From evil of heart, My teachings soon fade.

So go Ye in love and take what Ye need.
My flesh be Thy feast though take not with greed.
And those of the Wise whose beckon I know,
May balance preserve Thee, above and below.

(HPS lights the Goddess candle.)

The Charge of the Goddess

(HPS as the Goddess Herself, the HPS turns to face the coven.)

HP: Listen to the words of the Great Mother, she who

of old was called among Azerothians, by names to many to name including the White Lady, Elune, Earth Mother, and the Goddess of the Moon.

HPS: Whenever ye have need of any thing, once in the month, and better it be when the moon is full, then shall ye assemble in some secret place and adore the spirit of Me, who is Queen of all witches.

There shall ye assemble, ye who are fain to learn all sorcery, yet have not won its deepest secrets; to these I will teach things that are yet unknown. And ye shall be free from slavery; and as a sign that ye be really free, ye shall be naked in your rites (under your clothes if you like); and ye shall dance, sing, feast, make music and love, all in My praise. For Mine is the ecstasy of the spirit, and Mine also is joy on earth; for My law is love unto all beings.

Keep pure your highest ideal; strive ever towards it; let naught stop you or turn you aside. For I am the secret door which opens upon the land of youth and Mine is the cup of wine of life, and the Cauldron of Rebirth, which is the Holy Grail of immortality.

I am the gracious goddess, who gives the gift of joy unto the heart of all. Upon earth, I gave the knowledge of the spirit eternal; and beyond death, I give peace and freedom, and reunion with those who have gone before.

Nor do I require sacrifice for behold, I am the mother of all living things, and all life is precious to Me therefore, I pour my love out upon the earth.

HP: Listen to the words of the Star Goddess; she in the dust of whose feet are the hosts of heaven and whose body encircles the universe.

HPS: I who am the beauty of the green earth

And the white moon among the stars

And the mysteries of the waters,

I call upon your soul to arise and come unto me.

For, I am the soul of nature that gives life to the universe.

From Me all things proceed and unto Me they must return.

Let my worship be in the heart that rejoices, for behold-

All acts of love and pleasure are My rituals.

Let there be beauty and strength, power and compassion,

Honor and humility, mirth and reverence within you.

And you who seek to know Me, know that your

Seeking and yearning will avail you not, unless

You know the Mystery:

For if that which you seek, you find not within yourself,

You will never find it without.

For behold, I have been with you from the beginning;

I am that which is attained at the end of desire.

Drawing down the Sun

Invocation to the God

HP:     You are the stag of seven tines.

You are the Lord of all things wild,

the consort of She whom we adore and soon again, you'll be her child.

You have many names, Nozdormu, Ursol, and Ursoc, or Malygos,

but most know you as the Sun of She whom we adore, Cenarius.

Although the oak grows, and the holly is becoming wan,

Today you begin to gain your might on this equinox and the lengthening of the light.

You are the stag of seven tines.

In your honor, we light the balefires until the smoke climbs to the stars from a thousand sparking spires.

Strike the harp. Gather the flutes, drums, sing, and dance in honor of you for Spring is here to banish winter darkness.

You are the stag of seven tines.

Great Father, return to Earth, again,

Come at my call and show Yourself to men.

Bear, Cheetah, and Panther, upon the wild hill’s way,

Lead us from winter’s night into spring day.

Forgotten are the ways of sleep and night—

Men seek for them whose eyes have lost the light.

Open the door of dreams, whereby men come to thee.

Ruler of wild things, Descend upon thy servant and priest;

O answer unto me.

(HP lights the God candle.)

Charge of the God

HPS:
Listen to the words of the Horned God,

The Guardian of all things wild and free,

Keeper of the Gates of Death,

Whose Call we all must Heed:

HP: I am the fire within your Heart,

The yearning of your Soul.

I, the Hunter of Knowledge, Seeker of the Holy Quest

I, who stand in the darkness, am He whom you call     Death.

I, the Consort and Mate of Her whom we adore,

Beckoned forth to Thee,

To learn the secrets of Death and Peace,

Come thou unto me.

HPS: Listen to the words of the Horned God, he who rules the wild places and at whose feet D Èth shall place you when you reach life’s rest.

HPS: I am corn at harvest and fruit on the trees.

I am He who leads you home.

With Scourge and Flame, Blade and Blood,

These are mine own gifts to thee.

Call unto me in the forest wild and hilltop bare,

And seek me in the Darkest Night.

I, who have been called by many names including Ursol, and Ursoc, Malygos,

And Cenarius.

Speak to thee in thy search, Come to dance and sing;

Come live and love; behold this is worshiping.

I, am thy Father. You are my children. On swift night wings,

it is I who lay you at the Mother’s feet;

to be reborn and to return again to seek .

Know me, I am the untamed wind,

the fury of storm.

Seek me with pride and humility,

and passion in your Soul.

Statement of Purpose

HP: Once more, again and again, eon after eon, the wheel of the year turns from darkness to light. Today is the celebration of the spring equinox: the first time this year that the sun shares an equal amount of the day with the dark of the night. However, from this day forward until the summer solstice the days will lengthen and warm.

Therefore, to honor the God and the Goddess, we have gathered here to celebrate the sabbat of Ostara—the spring equinox.

Main Working

Rekindling the Fire

HP: (stands in the East)

HPS: (stands in the West facing the HP across the cauldron. The HPS carries the wand in her right hand.)

Coveners: (array themselves about the circle.)

HPS: We kindle this fire today

In the presence of the Holy Ones, without malice, without jealousy,

Without envy, without fear of aught beneath the Sun,

But the High Gods, the Old Ones, and the Wise Ones.

Thee we invoke, O Light of Life,

Be Thou a bright flame before to light the night,

Be thou a guiding star above us;

Be thou a smooth path beneath us;

Blaze forth in our hearts a flame of love,

For neighbor, and kindred, foe and friend,

Let our compassion shine as though the sun above,

And for the beasts and birds of the wild places you love.

O radiant Son God of the Goddess divine,

From the lowliest to highest of all,

Show forth thy wisdom’s warming light to shine,

For us, for kindred kind, for all creatures great and small.

HPS: (Holds the wand aloft while walking slowly deosil around the cauldron until she is standing in front of the HP.

HPS: O Sun, be thou armed to conquer the dark.

HPS: (Presents the wand to the HP and then stands aside.)

HP: (Accepts the wand)

I am here to light your way.

(Holds the wand high in salute and returns it to the altar.)

Maiden: (Presents lighter or a lit taper—which she lit from the altar—to the HPS. The maiden steps aside.)

HP: (Lights the cauldron candle with the taper/lighter and then hands the taper/lighter back to maiden who replaces it on the altar.)

Power Raising

HPS: (Leads the coveners in a power raising chant before the seeds of magick working)

Within the earth a tiny seed

sends shoots towards the Sun

The Maiden sings her song of spring

And the blooming has begun

Call the seed, the root, the bud

Call the Sun so bright

Sing your song and bid farewell

To the cold of winter’s night.

O lady of the scented leaves

Lay your cloak of vibrant green

Dance the wheel and dance the world

At the blooming of the land.

Within the egg the serpent sleeps

before the break of day

In colours bold he cracks the shell

And wakens all the fae

The ground is split by growing things

That weave upon the hills

The vines and flowers join the dance

To clothe the winter’s chill

O lady of the scented leaves

Lay your cloak of vibrant green

Dance the wheel and dance the world

At the blooming of the land.

Planting the Seeds of Magick

Maiden: (Distributes packets of seeds… When all coveners have a seed packet, the HPS continues speaking.)

HPS: Spring is the time of renewal, growth and of planting. It is the time of year when the dark months are behind us and we look forward to the lengthening days of spring and the eventual warmth and abundance of summer.

In times past when we have stood in this circle, we’ve raised power for change in our lives and tonight we’re going to do much the same with a twist. Instead of focusing our energy on the mundane we’re going to push our magickal envelopes. Tonight, explore your wildest magickal imaginings. Think about what magickal feat you’d like to accomplish in the coming springtime. Maybe you want to raise dragons. Maybe you want to join a faery ring. Maybe you finally want to find the courage to meet your animal or spirit guide. I don’t know—but whatever task you choose make it magickal, and make it bold. Stretch your imaginations!

Now, focus your intent of the magickal transformation or action you want to perform upon your packet of seeds. Be very clear about what it is you want.

(HPS pause for few moments to let the coveners focus their intent.)

Next, reaffirm and believe in yourself and your power. Remember if what you seek you do not find within, then you shall never find it without.

(HPS pauses again for a few moments.)

Finally, just as a tree grows, blooms, and then bears fruit, visualize your magickal endeavor come to fruition and how you’ll enjoy the fruits of your success.

(HPS pauses again for a few moments.)

But like any good spell, a plant must be cared for and nurtured. Therefore, take these seeds when you leave this circle and plant the seeds of magick. Know that as your seeds grow, and thrives as plant, so does your power. Each day when you see your seeds growing it shall be a talisman and testament to your power of will and magick. Take good care of these seeds so that your magick may grow.

Now to give these seeds a good start, to emphasize that the power and the magick reside within us, we’re going to do a circle chant. Beginning with the person to my left, each of you in turn shall say the following:

I am the flow and I am the ebb;

I am the weaver and I am the web.

(The HPS indicates who should start the chant then each covener in turn chants the above refrain.)

Covener: I am the flow and I am the ebb;

I am the weaver and I am the web.

(The chant continues around the circle, each covener trying to say their piece more intently than the last until like a wave, it reaches the HPS/HP.)

HPS: I am the flow and I am ebb;

HP: I am the weaver and I am the web.

All: We are the flow and we are the ebb.

We are the weavers and we are the web.

HP: (Next, the High Priest names one of the women to be the Spring Queen and stands her in front of the altar. He crowns her with the chaplet of flowers .The High Priestess then presents the Spring Queen with her bouquet. Then, starting with the Spring Queen, everyone jumps over the fire, singly or in couples, not forgetting to wish.)

Consecration of the Wine and Cakes (Symbolic Great Rite)

Great Rite (Symbolic)

(HPS takes the chalice and the HP stands before her holding his athame.)

HPS: You are the bright sun and staff of Cenarius.

(HP lowers his athame into the wine)

HP: And you are Elune, the Grail of the Moon.

HPS/HP: And together we are one.

(HP replaces his athame upon the altar.)

Consecration of the Wine

HPS: (lays her athame down and places the chalice on the pentacle.)

HPS: May this offering to the God and Goddess keep us from ever knowing thirst.

Consecration of the Cakes

HPS: (removes the chalice and replaces it with the plate of cakes before the. She touches each cake in turn with her athame.)

HPS: May this offering to the God and Goddess keep us from ever knowing hunger.

Simple Feast (Cakes and Ale)

Queen of the Universe who wears a mantle of stars on this first spring night,

We gathered to bid hail to your Sun's warmth and light.

We thank you for your attending and witnessing these rites.

With your help, we shall start down the path to wisdom's light.

For this boon, and glimpse

Of your magick, and mystery,

We salute and thank Thee.

Alas, our time together now is past.

We bid thee farewell.

Stay if you will and join our repast.

Leave us if you must.

Ere you leave us, know that all who met here

Did so in perfect love and perfect trust.

HPS: (Extinguishes the Goddess candle)

Release of the God

HP: (Assumes the Osiris position)

Thou art the Stag of Seven tines.

He who’s power is wide as the flood on a plain.

Your wisdom stretches like a hawk across the sky,

Who but you with smoke and fire sets our heads alight?

We bid thee farewell as well as welcoming the sun and its warming rays,

And, we thank you for this spring boon which brings the lengthening days.

HP: (Extinguishes the God candle)

Quarter Dismissals

(The HP follows the HPS around the quarters—except where noted—while the rest of the coven remain in place around the circle but mimic the HPS’ gestures. At each quarter, the HPS and HP salute the quarter with their athames. After the dismissal, the HPS, HP, and coveners, draw the banishing pentagram. The banishing pentagram of Earth shall be used for all dismissals.)

North Hail, guardians of the North, Elemental Spirits of Earth.

On this first day of spring light, beneath the Sun’s light,

We thank you for witnessing and protecting our sacred magickal rite.

Go if you must; stay if you will; but know that we met in perfect love and perfect trust.

(Draw the banishing pentagram of Earth)

West Hail, guardians of the West, Elemental Spirits of Water.

On this first day of spring light, beneath the Sun’s light,

We thank you for witnessing and protecting our sacred magickal rite.

Go if you must; stay if you will; but know that we                         met in perfect love and perfect trust.

(Draw the banishing pentagram of Water)

South Hail, guardians of the South, Elemental Spirits of Fire,

On this first day of spring light, beneath the Sun’s light,

We thank you for witnessing and protecting our sacred magickal rite.

Go if you must; stay if you will; but know that we met in perfect love and perfect trust.

(Draw the banishing pentagram of Fire)

East Hail, guardians of the East, Elemental Spirits of Airs,

On this first day of spring light, beneath the Sun’s light,

We thank you for witnessing and protecting our sacred magickal rite.

Go if you must; stay if you will; but know that we                         met in perfect love and perfect trust.

(Draw the banishing pentagram of Air)

Opening the Circle

(HPS and HP face the altar together. The Deities have been thanked and the Quarters dismissed, therefore, the next action is to ‘take down’ the circle. Since the circle was thrice cast, it should be thrice unwound. Also, because the circle was cast deosil it should be undone in a widdershins direction.)

HPS: O Circle of Power, as I have conjured thee I now release your energies into this blade.

HPS:
(Rejoins the HP at the altar and then together they face the rest of the coven)

Just as the holly must yield to the oak, and the stars set when dawn begins,

Just as the spring equinox signals winters's end, it is time for us to leave this realm of magick, mystery, and the circle of our ancestors and friends.

HPS:        The circle is open, but remains unbroken.

            Blessed be.

Coveners:    Blessed be.

Imbolg 2010

   Posted by: Scrivener

What do groundhog s and the lactation of ewes have in common?

In this day probably nothing, but once upon a fairer time, both pointed reassuringly (at least as long as the groundhog didn’t see its shadow) to the lengthening of days and a return to springtime warmth. A quite literal translation of the Celtic—Old Irish— word, Imbolg (actually, Óimelc), is the lactation of ewes. Some also claim the word means, in the belly, but I believe that definition is probably a debasement of the word’s true meaning. I any of you reading this are more expert in Gaelic than me, feel free to correct my assumptions. Finally, since the Wiccan Sabbat, Imbolg, and Groundhog Day celebrations occur on the same day, you now know the connection between the two events.

Our coven, the Circle of the Dark Moon, like so many other Wiccans celebrated Imbolg this past Tuesday evening. Barb, one of our second-degree students, led the ritual. She also did a fine job of writing said ritual. The main working of the ritual was an Earth-healing dance and chant, which was appropriate since our tradition focuses more on the agricultural aspects in this the first of the fertility Sabbats.

Afterwards, we had a potluck dinner that featured many traditional Celtic foods. Scott, Barb’s son, and one of our first-degree students, prepared an Irish stew with a curry kicker. He also brought freshly baked bread. Michelle (first-degree student), brought a warm milk prepared with turmeric and cinnamon. The only way that drink could have been more appropriate for the Sabbat was if she had used ewe’s milk. Even though she was not assigned anything for this food rotation, Elaine (first-degree student) volunteered to bring the paper plates and plastic ware so that cleanup was a breeze—a fact that was not lost on my grateful wife. For dessert, there was chocolate cake. Okay, nothing traditional there, but hey, it was chocolate.

Thanks to everyone who attended, and brought food or consumables, and especially to our guest, Jess, who quite literally and quite appropriately—after all, Imbolg is a fertility Sabbat—had something “in the belly.” Jess informed us that she was five months pregnant and that she’s looking forward to her upcoming wedding. Finally, congratulations to Barb for a fine job in writing the ritual and in performing the Priestess duties. It was a pleasure conducting the ritual with you.
