Dark Moon of The

First-Degree Initiation

Circle of the Dark Moon

Coven



You will need these items:

  • The usual tools, candles, paraphernalia for ritual

Items specific to the Ritual

  • Blindfold
  • A length of twine/rope at least 8 feet long
  • Anointing Oil
  • Hand bell
  • 3 lengths of red cord (1 of 9 feet and 2 of 4 feet 6 inches)
  • A scourge
  • A boline

Preparation:

Cleansing Sacred Space

Sweep the area with besom then smudge with violet-sage.


Cleansing Sacred Space

(Maiden sweeps—with circular widdershins motions—widdershins about the ritual area.
When she is satisfied that enough negativity has been removed she sets the besom aside. Next, she lights the black crone/resolutions candle.
Finally, the maiden checks the layout of the altar making sure that the black candle is at
least near the cauldron.

Except for the above mentioned exceptions, the maiden ensures that the altar should be
divided between male objects on the right—God candle, censer, salt dish, HP’s
athame/sword/wand, and besom— and female objects on the left—Goddess candle,

cauldron, bowl of water, chalice, libation plate (if used), bell, and the HPS’ athame/wand/sword. The pentacle should be placed forward and between the Goddess and God candles.

The maiden also ensures that the chalice is filled and the ‘cakes’ are on the plate. When these tasks are completed, she assists the HPS in any other way deemed necessary. )

Call to the Circle

HPS: (Rings bell to call everyone to the circle.)

HPS: This time is not a time; this place is not a place; today is not a day;

and this night is not a night. I stand at the threshold between the worlds. I stand ready to part the veil of mysteries may the Ancient Ones help and protect us on this mighty journey.

Consecration of the Elements

Charge at the Pentacle

(HP and HP kneel before the altar. The HP is on the right. Both of them place their right hands upon the pentacle. After a moment, they rise.)

Blessing the Salt

HPS: (places dish of salt upon the pentacle)
HPS: I consecrate thee O creature of salt from the Earth,
magickal aid, and seasoning for Hecate’s black cauldron upon the
hearth.

I cast from thee all hindrance and malignity, so that in my works of magick you may well serve me.

(HPS removes the dish of salt from the pentacle and then places the dish of water upon the pentacle. Then she takes the salt and using her athame drops into the water three measures of salt. She stirs the water three times with the tip of her athame. HPS sets the salt aside.)

Blessing the Water

HPS: I consecrate thee O creature of water—dark bubbles in the
cauldron of rebirth—life giving, whether swiftly flowing or falling
from the firmament.
I cast from thee all hindrance and malignity, so that in my works of
magick you may well serve me.
All: So mote it be.

Blessing the Air

(HP places the censer containing incense upon the pentacle)

HP: I consecrate thee O creature of Air—force of the dark moon that

brings the imagination to dare.

I cast from thee all hindrance and malignity, so that in my works of
magick you may well serve me.

All: So mote it be.

Blessing the Fire

(HP lights the incense)

HP: I consecrate thee O creature of Fire—force of Magick’s pyre.

I cast from thee all hindrance and malignity, so that in my works of magick you may well serve me.

All: So mote it be.

(HP sets the censer aside.)


Circle Casting

By Earth

(HP holds the scabbard while the HPS draws the sword. HPS and HP proceed around the circle. While walking about the circle, HPS holds sword pointed at the perimeter. )

HPS: (Traces the about the circle with her athame or sword. If “increasing magick” is to be done she walks deosil about the circle otherwise she travels widdershins if banishing magick is being performed.)

HPS: I conjure thee, O Circle of Power to be a meeting place of love, joy and truth:

A boundary between the worlds of men and the Realms of the Mighty Ones.

This magick circle is both a rampart and protection against all wickedness that shall both contain and entertain the powers that shall be raised within.

Wherefore do I consecrate thee in the name of Lugh and Hecate.

Strengthening the Circle

By Water

Witch 1: Rain of water and salt sprinkled upon the ground,

Protect us from wickedness, and make our magick sound.

(Sprinkles the salt and water mixture around the circle)

By Air

Witch 2: Into the night sky, incense smoke, roil, rise, and writhe,

Sunder us from the mundane like a scythe.

(Takes incense around circle)

By Fire

Witch 3: Fire, shine true and bright,

Aid, grant clarity of sight,

Mayest the Gods be with us this night.

Calling the Quarters

Note: if the coven plans to perform “increasing magick,” the quarters should be called in usual deosil order of East, South, West, and then North.

However, if the coven plans don’t include a working, or banishing magick is being performed, then, the quarters should be called in widdershins order of East, North, West, and then South. For the purposes of this document, the quarters will be presented in traditional dark moon widdershins order.

The Individual quarter calls themselves are presented on separate pages for ease of changing calling order. Page numbers have also been removed on the quarter call pages so that all one needs to do is reorder the pages to correctly reflect the type of magick being performed during the ritual.

O Hecate, be with me on this dark moon night.

Where the veil is thinnest, new beginnings begun, and banishments done,
you teach us the mysteries on the dark moon night.
Mistress of all sorceries, to those brave enough, you grant the sight.
O Hecate, please come unto me; grant me your wisdom’s might.

(HPS lights the Goddess Candle)

The Charge of the Dark Goddess

HP: Listen to the words of the Dark Mother, who of old was called Hecate, Nuit, Morrigan, Banba, Erda, Macha, MotherNight, Sekhmet and many other names.

HPS: Whenever you seek wisdom, at the time of the Darkening Moon, come together in love and trust and learn of Me, who am the Wisest of Crones. You who search the mysteries of the Earth, the secrets of air and darkness, of blood and fire, the silence of the uttermost stars, come unto me, and I shall whisper to you in the depths of midnight.

You shall approach Me in silence, and as a sign that you are free from fear, your breast shall bare to My blade, for fear has no place in My mysteries, and that which you seek of me will destroy you if you fear it.

For I am the dolmen arch beyond which stretch the mysteries of infinity. I am the silence before birth and after death. I am the clouded mirror in which you scry your own soul. I am mist in the twilight, the vast and starry sky of midnight, shadows on the Moon. All things come to Me in the end, and yet I am the beginning of all. I meet you at the crossroads; I lead you through the darkness, my hand you grasp in the passage between the worlds. To those that toy with Me, I am an instrument of self-destruction. Yet to the true seeker do I bring knowledge beyond mortal comprehension.

Of you shall I demand the utter truth of all that you are, and in return shall I give you all that you may be, all that I am. For My wisdom is beyond the Ages, and knowledge of My secrets is power over self, over fear, over death. Nor do I demand aught of you, which you cannot give. I am the Death that must be so that Life may continue, for behold, Life is immortal because the living must die.

I am the strength that protects, that limits; I am the power that says No, and NO further, and That Is Enough. I am the things that cannot be spoken of, and I am the laughter at the edge of Death.

Come with me into the warm enfolding dark; feel my caresses in the hands, in the mouth, in the body of one you love, and be transformed.

Gather in the moonless night and speak in unknown tongues; the Dark Mother and I will listen. Sing to us, and cry out, and the Power will be yours to wield.

Blow me a kiss when the sky is dark, and I will smile, but no kiss return, for my kiss is the final one for all mortal flesh.

Statement of Purpose

HP/HPS: The dark moon is a time for beginnings and endings. Tonight, our dedicants have reached childhood’s end and are ready to be reborn as first-degree witches.

Meditate upon the waxing of the moon.
According to Celtic tradition,
from new to full the waxing of Lady Lune,
is a time of inner transformation.

In the dark, listen to the heightened light.
Your awareness soars—your soul’s voice so bright.
Meditate on the moon and not on this rhyme.
During the waxing moon, spend five minutes time.

See Hecate, Lady of the new moon,
Come to assist you and offer a boon.
At the witching hour when her magick peaks,

The Initiation

Initiator: O thou who standest at the threshold between the pleasant world of the mundane and the magickal domain of the Lords and Ladies of the Outer Planes. Hast thou the courage to make the journey to make the crossing?

Initiator: (Places the point of the athame against the postulant’s heart)

For I say verily, it would be better for you to rush upon my blade and seek death than to enter herein with fear in your heart.

Postulant: I have two passwords: perfect love and perfect trust.

Initiator: All who have such are doubly welcome. I now give thee a third password to pass through this dread doorway.

(Lays down the athame and kisses the postulant on the cheek. The initiator then goes behind the postulant and pushes them into the circle.)

HPS: (seals the doorway)

Initiator: (leads the postulant to the eastern quarter)

Take heed ye Mighty Ones, Eastern Spirits of Air that Postulant name is properly prepared to be initiated as priestess and witch.

(leads the postulant to the southern quarter)

Take heed ye Mighty Ones, Southern Spirits of Fire that Postulant name is properly prepared to be initiated as priestess and witch.

Initiator: In other religions, the postulant kneels while the priest towers over them. But in the Arts Magickal we are taught to serve first, and be humble and welcome the newcomer.

Five-fold Kiss

Initiator:
(administers the five-fold kiss—right foot, left foot, right knee, left knee, womb, right breast, left breast and lips)

Blessed be thy feet, that have brought me in these ways.

Blessed be thy knees, that shall kneel at the sacred altar.

Blessed be thy womb/penis, without which we would not be.

Blessed be thy breasts, formed in beauty/strength.

Blessed be thy lips, which shall utter the sacred names.

Taking of the Measure

Initiator: Now we are going to take your measure.

HPS: (HPS takes the measure of the postulant with the twine or ribbon. First, she measures from feet to crown and cuts off that length. Then using the cut length, measures around the forehead of the postulant and ties a knot in the length. Next the HPS measures around the heart and ties a knot in the measure to mark it. Finally, the HPS measures around the hips and marks that measurement with a knot.

When she’s finished the HPS winds up the measure and lays it on the altar.)

The Test

Initiator: Before thou art sworn, art thou ready to pass the ordeal and suffer for the knowledge?

Postulant: I am.

HPS: (Helps the postulant to kneel and lower their head. She then loosens and removes the leg bindings. She then ties the postulant’s knees and ankles together. Next, the HPS fetches the scourge from the altar.)

HPS: (rings the bell 3 times)

Three.

Initiator: (scourges the postulant with 3 light strokes.)

HPS: Seven.

Initiator: (scourges the postulant with 7 light strokes.)

HPS: Nine.

Initiator: (scourges the postulant with 9 light strokes.)

HPS: Twenty-one.

Initiator: (scourges the postulant with 21 light strokes.)

Initiator: Thou hast bravely passed the test. Are you ready to swear that thou wilt always be true to the Arts?

Postulant: I am.

The Oath

Initiator: Art thou ready to always help, protect, and defend thy brothers and sisters of the Arts?

Postulant: I am.

Initiator: Then repeat after me phrase by phrase.

I, Postulant name, in the presence of the Elder Gods do of my own free will and accord, and without reservation,

most solemnly swear, that I will ever keep secret what I’m asked to keep secret, and never reveal, the secrets of the Arts Magickal, except it be to a proper person, properly prepared within a Circle such as I am in now;

And, that I will never deny the secrets to such a person if he or she be properly vouched for by a brother or sister of the Art.

That I will learn to master the Art Magical; but ever remember the rune: “What good be the tools without the inner light? What good be magick without wisdom’s sight?”

That in due course I will strive to find a worthy pupil in magick, to whom in future years I can hand down the knowledge I acquire.


That I will never use the Art Magickal merely to impress foolish persons. Nor shall I invoke magick for any wrongful end.


That I will help the Craft of the Wise, and hold its honor as I would my own.

This I swear before the Elder Gods and those of the Art gathered here and by my hopes of a future life, mindful that my measure has been taken. May my weapons turn against me, and Karma reward me justly should I break this my solemn oath.

Postulant: (repeats each phrase)

HPS: (Helps the postulant to their feet. She then retrieves the anointing oil and the chalice of wine.)

Initiator: (takes a bit of oil)

I hereby sign thee with the Triple Sign. I consecrate thee with oil.

(Touches the postulant above the pubic hair, on the right breast and then the left breast)

(Moistens his lips with a bit of wine)

I consecrate thee with my lips…

(Kisses the postulant in the same places as he/she touched with oil.)

…Priestess and Witch.

HPS: (Removes the postulant’s bindings.)

(Members of the coven now may congratulate the Universe’s newest witch)

Introduction of the Tools


(The Initiator removes each tool from the altar with a kiss and hands it to the new initiate. The initiator explains each tool in turn and when he is finished with an explanation, the initiate gives the tool to HPS who returns it to the altar with a kiss.)

Initiator: First, I present the Magic Sword. With this, as with the athame, thou canst form all Magic Circles, dominate, subdue and punish all rebellious spirits and daemons, and even persuade angels and good spirits. With this in thy hand, thou art ruler of the Circle.

Next, I present the Athame. This is the true witch’s weapon and has all the powers of the Magic Sword.

Next, I present the White-hilted knife. Its use is to form all instruments used in the Art. It can only be used in a Magick Circle.

Next, I present the Wand. Its use is to call up and control certain angels and genii to whom it would not be meet to use the Magick Sword.

Next, I present the Cup. This is the vessel of the Goddess, the Cauldron of Cerridwen, the Holy Grail of Immortality. From this we drink in

Comradeship, and in honor of the Goddess.

Next, I present the Pentacle. This is for the purpose of calling up appropriate spirits.

Next, I present the Scourge. This is the sign of power and domination. It is also used to cause purification and enlightenment. For it is written: “To learn you must suffer and be purified.” Art thou willing to suffer to learn?”

Postulant: I am.

Initiator: Next, and lastly I present the cords. They are of use to bind the Sigils of The Art; also to bind the material basis; also, they are necessary in the Oath.

In the name of Lugh, Cernunnos, Brighid and Hecate, I now salute thee, newly consecrated Witch and Priest/ess of the Goddess.

(Acknowledges this achievement in some way—i.e. handshake, kiss, hug, etc.)

Reintroduction of to the Quarters

Initiator: (leads the postulant to the eastern quarter)

Take heed ye Mighty Ones, Eastern Spirits of Air that postulant name is consecrated as priestess, witch, and hidden child of the Goddess.

(leads the postulant to the southern quarter)

Take heed ye Mighty Ones, Southern Spirits of Fire that postulant name is been consecrated as priestess, witch, and hidden child of the Goddess.

HP: As the athame is the male.

HPS: So the Chalice is to the female.

HPS/HP: And the two are conjoined as one in truth.

Consecration of the Wine

HPS: (lays her athame down and places the chalice on the pentacle.)

HPS: May this offering to the God and Goddess keep us from ever knowing thirst.

Consecration of the Cakes

(HP holds the platter of cakes before the HPS. She touches each cake in turn)

HPS: This food is the blessings gods to our bodies. Let us Partake of it freely. And, as we share, let us remember always to see to it that aught that we have we share with those who have nothing.

Cakes and Ale

Note: the ceremony of Cakes and Ales now proceeds according to the HPS’ wishes: either the plate and chalice is passed from covener to covener and they serve themselves or each other according to coven custom or the HPS and HP proceed from covener to covener serving them and finally each other.

HPS: (When all of the coveners have partaken of the simple feast, the HPS places some food and drink in the libation bowl. HPS raises the libation plate in salute.)

HPS: To the Gods.

Closing the Circle

HPS: (faces the altar, assumes the Goddess position—or alternatively salutes with athame—and recites)

Hecate, Queen of all Sorceries,

You have taught us that even in the Underworld there is light.
Past the crossroads, beneath the moonless dolmen arch,
Protector of witches, you walk with us along path of wisdom’s start.

Of your magick, and mystery,
We salute and thank Thee.

Quarter Dismissals

(The HP follows the HPS around the quarters—except where noted—while the rest of the coven remain in place around the circle but mimic the HPS’ gestures. At each quarter, the HPS and HP salute the quarter with their athames. After the dismissal, the HPS, HP, and coveners, draw the banishing pentagram.)

Grounding the Circle

(HPS and HP face the altar together. The Deities have been thanked and the Quarters dismissed, therefore, the next action is to ‘take down’ the circle. Since the circle was thrice cast, it should be thrice unwound. Also, because the circle was cast doesil it should be undone in a widdershins direction.

An Athame or sword may be used; but I prefer the sword for reasons you shall see later. Assuming it was the HPS who cast the circle, we’ll let her undo it.)

(HP holds the scabbard while the HPS draws the sword. HPS and HP proceed around the circle. While walking about the circle, HPS holds sword pointed at the perimeter.)

HPS: O Circle of Power, as I have conjured thee I now release thy energies into this blade.

(In your mind’s eye, see the circle dissolve into a wispy energy smoke, which the glowing blade readily absorbs)

Where there once existed a rampart between this world and the Otherworld, the rampart is no more. Once again, our realms are separate. However, the love and joy with which we met here tonight remains undiminished.

A. There is no cost for classes.

Q. Where do I attend classes?
A. We hold both in-person classes (we’re located in Warner Robins, GA) and online classes.

Q. Do I need any books?
A. Both the online and in person classes we use the following books:

The Real Witches Craft by Kate West,
The Inner Temple of Witchcraft by Christopher Penzak,
Buckland’s Complete Book of Witchcraft by Raymond Buckland,
Wicca: the Complete Craft by DJ Conway.

The book list varies by year to year and depends on the degree program. It’s not necessary buy any of the books. I rarely give
reading assignments. While I base my lectures on the above listed books, lecture content is not exclusively from said sources.

Q. How do the online classes work? You just email me a lesson and then maybe I get to hear from an instructor once in a while–
right?
A. No, teachers and students interact just as though they were in a classroom. The online classes use Skype. Skype is a program which
allows student and teacher to converse and to see each other over the internet. To use Skype, you’ll have to download the client
program from http://Skype.com.

Q. When are classes held?
A. The in person classes are held Saturdays at 2:00 PM Eastern Time.

Q. What time are the online classes held?
Online classes are held Sundays at 3:00 PM Eastern Time.

Q. What else can you tell me about the classes?
A. Class duration is usually one to one and a half hours long. The class format is a mixture of lectures based on reading material, and
our own experience coupled with teachings specific to the Dark Moon Tradition, and student participation. Additionally, we try to be
as hands-on as possible when it comes to things like herbalism, divination, and other ‘crafty’ types of activities. Additionally as part
of their training, our second-degree students will from time to time teach a class. One of the students will also be assigned to
mentor you. Not to say you won’t be able to email or call me with questions should you want to do so.

Q. How do I get setup for the online classes?
A. After you’ve downloaded and installed Skype, you’ll also have to register an account with http://skype.com. The software and
registration is free. Once you have your account set up, execute the Skype program and sign in—via the program not the web—and
send a request to add CircleOfTheDarkMoon as a contact. When we receive your request, we’ll add you as a contact and add you to
our class group and then on Sundays at 3:00 PM ET, we’ll initiate the call. So what you need to do on Sunday is load Skype, log in
via the program, and wait for a call from CIRCLEOFTHEDARKMOON and then answer it. After that things work pretty much the same
as any other conference call except we’ll be using computers, web cams, microphones, and earphones or speakers.  computers,

Q. Do I need any special hardware to participate in the online classes?
A. Even if you don’t have a web cam, you can still use Skype with just speakers and microphones or a headphone/microphone combo set.

However, we recommend getting a cheap headphone/microphone combination set available at Best Buy or similar stores for around
$40. The reason for that is with headphones, we don’t have the problem of feedback from the PC speakers.

Q. Does it cost anything to use Skype?
A. No, don’t worry about buying Skype credit or any of the other crap they want to sell you. The part of Skype we’re using is a free
service.

Q. How do I set up Skype?
A. You will need to tell Skype what type of microphone/webcam/speakers you’re using. You do that via the options tab on Skype. The
Skype website has fairly good instructions for setting up your hardware. If you’re having real difficulties, contact us and we’ll assist
you.

Can You Help Me?

Recently I received this letter from a seeker.

Hello,

My name is Gabrielle, and I was just browsing around for Wiccan web sites and found yours. Although I’m not sure that I could believe in Wicca, (I’m an atheist), I am extremely fascinated by your religion. I was hoping to get some tips on how to learn more about your lifestyle etc. I wish that I was able to believe in something so beautiful as Wicca, but it unfortunately isn’t for me I guess. Anything that you can tell me would be great. I have been trying to find some tarot cards that I like because I love the idea of them, and I’ve been searching bookstores for books about witches and haven’t found anything that would jump out at me…of course, I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing.

Merry Meet Gabrielle:

I usually reply to emails sooner, but two weeks ago my parents were visiting and stayed for about a week, and the following  week I had dental surgery and didn’t feel much like doing anything including chewing.

It’s always nice to hear from seekers such as yourself. Yes, I know you said you’re an atheist, but even atheists want to know the truth about existence and that’s all a seeker is—someone trying to find their true path. Truth is truth no matter whether you ascribe it to a God-form or quantum mechanics.

Faith is another matter. You either believe in something or you don’t and no amount of evangelizing by me or someone else can change your mind if deep down you cannot reconcile the proffered beliefs with your own worldview. However, even a quantum physicist must make a leap of faith; for many of the exotic particles they study cannot be observed directly but rather only as an after effect of a quantum event. Take for instance the subatomic tachyon particle. Nobody has ever seen one or caught one in a Petri dish, but the existence of these particles fill gaps in relativistic equations thus making Einstein’s special theory of relativity work. It was as though the scientists said, “gee, it would be nice to have a particle that travelled faster than light to make these equations come out right.” So the physicist believes in tachyons not because he’s seen one or measure one but because he sees the effect the tachyon has on quantum mechanics. Similarly, astronomers for many years only knew or  ‘believed’ in the existence of black holes not because they could see them but by observing the black holes gravitational effects upon other astronomical bodies.

Thus it is with Goddess and God. Seldom do we feel their hand upon our shoulders, even rarer is the manifestation to the visible or audible. Although once (recently) I did have the Goddess throw a book at me, but that was just to get my attention. I’ve always said that I’m one of her slower students.  Like a whisper of cool silk passing against our skin or a sudden intuition or when reality bends to meet your will, that is the most likely way most of us experience the touch of the Divine upon our lives. When you feel the connectivity of things in the universe, you can’t help but  understand that when we are done with this mortal coil, that what happens to our spirit is something more than winking into nothingness or vacationing for eternity in the Summerland. That somehow our spirits are meant for more than that.

Don’t despair if you haven’t had such an epiphany. There are people far older than you that have  less of a clue. Even a belief in not believing in the gods or even a god is a belief and perhaps as valid a path as any. Only the person walking a path knows whether it’s the right way or not.

Okay, I think we covered faith as well as this space permits. You also asked for any information we could give you.

Our tradition, the Dark Moon Tradition, is based upon Gardnerian and Alexandrian teachings. Gardnerian and Alexandrian are two other traditions—just as Christianity is divided into different doctrines (e.g. Catholicism, Protestantism, etc.)—Wicca is similarly divided. What makes our tradition different from our Gardnerian and Alexandrian counterparts is we emphasize the use of witchcraft, chaos, and ceremonial magick in our practice. Contrary to popular belief, not all witches are Wiccans. Wicca is a spiritual path and witchcraft is merely a system of magick much like Kabala, or Ceremonial Magick.

Our own spirituality is nature-based. We strive to understand how everything is since to us the world is one large living organism. This belief within us is shamanistic. Most of us are rabid environmentalists for by saving the planet, we’re really saving ourselves. While for us Wicca is a way of life and not just a religion, we observe 8 holy days or Sabbats and 24 or more Esbats. Our Sabbats are:

  • Samhain (our new year and your Halloween)
  • Yule or the Winter Solstice (observed around Dec. 21 not on the 25th like Christmas)
  • Imbolg (Feb 2)
  • Ostara or Spring Equinox (around March 21st  similar to the Christian Easter)
  • Beltane (May 1)
  • Litha or Summer Solstice (Around June 21st)
  • Lughnasadh (August 1)
  • Mabon or Fall Equinox (Around September 21)

We also observe Esbats which are lesser holy days such as the full and dark moon and the occasional blue moon.

Our way of life is initiatory and considered a mystery school where we attempt to learn and understand the miracles and mysteries which everyday life presents.

You also asked me to recommend some reading material. I’m going to list three books. While not an exhaustive study of Wicca, these books give a good basic understanding of the Wiccan way of life. The books are listed below this paragraph.

  • A Witch Alone by Marian Green
  • Buckland’s Complete Book of Witchcraft by Raymond Buckland
  • The Ultimate Book of Shadows for the New Generation Solitary Witch by Silver Ravenwolf (I’m not SR’s biggest fan, but this book is particularly good for would be teenage Wiccans.

Hopefully, the above list will be enough to get you pointed in the right direction. And hopefully, I’ve been of some help also. Background

This spread was a remote reading for a friend. I’ll refer to her as ‘R’. Typically when asking a question about a situation, I like to use the Celtic Spread. I use the full 78-card deck for readings; therefore, I sometimes yet need to peek at the card interpretations. However, I look at the symbolism on the card and add my own thoughts as well. One must do that otherwise, there would only be a finite number of unique readings possible (albeit still a large number—something like (78! / [number of cards used]) if my memory of statistics serves me.) The deck I currently favor is the Gilded Tarot.

R is a fellow guildmate of the online game I play. She asked me for a reading and I consented, curious to find out how accurate I’d be without being close to the querent. She lives in Texas with her boyfriend who recently lost his job. I also know that things have not been all quiet on the home front.

The cards definitely echo her situation and unfortunately, unless R alters her present course, I don’t see much improvement of her situation. For a card-by-card analysis, see my comments below each card listed.

The Reading

Significator (Self)

The World

This card, usually chosen by the querent represents how they see themselves. Since this was a remote reading, I chose by cut of the cards using my left hand since the left hand represents spiritual matters.

A woman stands atop a pedestal surrounded by a wreath. Her demeanor is proud and confident. She wears a lion mask and her hair is blown back as though it were a mane. She holds in each hand a silver wand. The wand is a symbol of air and intellect. The two wands together suggest mastery of the unconscious and conscious.

R believes that she is captain of her own ship and master of all she surveys. This card could also indicate a victory or a completion of task. But does the reflection in the mirror always tell us the truth?

1. Self (Present Situation)

The Emperor (reversed)

The emperor is a leadership card. In this position and reversed the card indicates that the querent arrived at the present place through some poor judgments or miscalculations. Possibly, because the querent was too stodgy and unwilling to let go of autocratic rules or adhered to strongly to ingrained habits.

2. Self (Immediate Influences)

Five of swords

A man holds aloft a sword in triumph on a battlefield strewn with the dead, dying, and injured. The sword is the symbol of fire and passion.

Was whatever victory R won worth the cost? Sometimes the best battles are those waged in the halls of diplomacy.

With the Significator, this card also suggests that R is at an end of a cycle or period in her life.

3. Self (Recent Influences)

Ace of Cups (reversed)

The cup or chalice is the symbol of feminine nurturing and is of the element water. Water signs such as Cancer are homebody nurturers. The chalice or grail is also a symbol of the depth of universal gifts of romance, love, and idealism.

Because this card is reversed, (the cup is upside down and hence emptied), it means that R’s journey for whatever this particular grail stands for is at an end and combined with the previous card’s influence it would indicate possible dissatisfaction with a quest’s result.

Whatever R was looking for, she didn’t find it or it wasn’t worth the price she paid. The moon phases depicted above the cup, again point to feminine influences but since they are ‘below’ the reversed cup it could mean that the moon’s pull is at a low ebb as are R’s feelings. She must feel as though the bounty of the universal grail’s gifts have all ‘run out’ on her.

4. Self (Past Influences)

Four of Cups (reversed)

This card echoes the negative side of the Emperor and in conjunction with the previous card indicates that R may be seeking an ideal that does not exist. She ignores what has been laid at her feet while following an internal dogma that dictates that something better is out there but she’s not exactly sure what it is. This is a negative manifestation of the truism that the grass is always greener…

5. Self (Possible Goal or Outcome)

The Sun (reversed)

This card is never negative—even when reversed. Reversal merely diminishes the Sun’s effect. The sun is pictured above a zodiac circle with Jupiter and Saturn figured prominently. The other planets in the orbits are also pictured.

It’s important to this reading that Jupiter is pictured since R is currently under some financial distress and Jupiter is generous and expansive when it comes to money matters.

If Jupiter is expansive, then Saturn is restrictive. Saturn is the astrological taskmaster that admonishes us to knuckled down and get to work.

As a possible goal or destination, and in combination with the previous card, I’d say that with a little hard work, R can reverse her economic misfortunes but maybe not to the degree she’d like.

6. Self (Future Influences)

Two of Pentacles (reversed)

The two of pentacles shows a man effortlessly balancing two pentacles. This card relates to having mastery and balance in one’s life—especially where work is concerned. As I see it R is lacking in this balance. The ship and the dolphin in the background of the card indicates travel. I see R moving to some place where she can achieve balance in work and home life.

7. Fears

The Lovers (reversed)

This card is not always about relationships. Actually, it deals more with choices. The original card depicted a man choosing between two women.

However, in R’s case, I think it is about a relationship. In the fears position, this card tells us that her biggest fear is damage to their relationship because of economic turmoil or decisions they’ve made in the past.

8. Outside Influences

Three of Pentacles (reversed)

The three of pentacles is about career and pride in workmanship. R feels unappreciated or at least under appreciated in her job. This card shows a craftsman admiring his work. He takes delight and joy in his work or his creation. I feel that R has lost this joy in her work and needs to try to recapture that feeling or move on to something else.

9. Hopes and Ideals

Eight of Swords

A maiden (appropriate since R is female—this goes double for the Significator card) blindfolded, and bound is surrounded by eight swords. This would seem a predicament for most people, but the maiden exhibits a calm, if not confident air.

If the Significator shows how the querent views themselves, then, this card shows the reality of that perception. In this case we have a match between self-perception and reality. If only R can find it within herself to let go of past influences, unrealistic expectations, and yes even a stubborn clinging to romantic ideals which can never come to fruition, she’ll soon find her bonds broken.

10. Outcome

Four of Pentacles (reversed)

The four of pentacles (pentacles are an Earth suit concerned with career, wealth, and possessions) is an extreme or intensifier of the Emperor (which was drawn for the present position card.) When the emperor (in the upright position) provide authority and order for the betterment of life, all is well. However, when reversed, as is the case for this reading, it is merely order for orders sake.

Rather than a warning about an impending financial loss (that’s already occurred), the card seems to echo the Three of Pentacles drawn in the outside influences position. This draw reinforces the fact that R has lost sight of the fact that money / jobs are mere abstractions and only a means not an end. Also she should not be so fixated on current financial difficulties as to miss some opportunities (remember the Sun drawn in possible outcome position?) that will present themselves. She just needs to be flexible enough to recognize these opportunities and open to taking an unexpected (or even unwanted) path.

Overall Analysis

Since at least four major arcana cards were drawn for this reading, that fact indicates strong forces are at work.

The preponderance of pentacle and cups cards drawn is also interesting. These cards indicate trouble at home and at work and or trouble with financial matters. Moreover, since there is actually a run of cards from the pentacles suite (two, three, and four) However, with a little hard work, these difficulties can be overcome.

Another bit of good news for R is that while she may still hold some unrealistic expectations (Three of Cups and Five of Swords) her basic perceptions of herself are spot on as indicated by the Significator, and Eight of Swords. She is a strong and confident person and if she can marshal the strength necessary to change her current course then her situation will improve.

Wiccan Q & A

Listed below are some recent questions posed by new students at The Circle of the Dark Moon School of Wicca, Witchecraft, and Magick.

1. What are the bare minimum altar tools required?

The bare minimums are nothing. Nevertheless, as I said people don’t like that answer because it removes the justification for buying tools. However, if you’re looking to set up a standard altar, then you would want a pentacle, God & Goddess candles, censer (or something to burn incense in), a chalice (or cup), libation dish (you could use an ordinary dish for this), salt and water dishes. You can use common household items for many of your altar tools.

2. What pantheon as a coven do we work with? (it seems like I have heard names from more than one pantheon.)

I can’t say as a coven since we’ve never sat down and discussed that—but what I do when writing the rituals is try to work with some of the better known goddesses so that the people in circle have a common reference visualization. That’s important for energy-raising.

But to answer your question, we work mainly with the Celtic pantheon. Lugh, is a god I have a personal relationship—despite the fact that Beth thinks Loki is my patron god. You have also probably heard Kris evoke, Cerredwen (the Goddess in her mother aspect), Hecate (as the Goddess in her crone or dark aspect), and occasionally, Flidais, Arianhod, or even Brigit (as the Goddess in her maiden aspect). A Celtic equivalent of Hecate would be Aradia or Morrigan. Aradia is the Queen of the Witches and Morrigan is mostly too terrible to evoke for casual rituals. While Aradia and Hecate are known best as the Queens of sorceries, Morrigan, or The Morrigan as she is sometimes known

3. How do you choose your own pantheon? Do you just pick one or do you go by ancestry?

You have to search your own heart. Meditate on that question, and then listen for the answer. You could use ancestry but ancestry from which lifetime would you use?

4. How do you come up with your wiccan name?

Numerology is one way to make your name even more special to you. There are two simple steps to choosing your name using numerology;

One method is to use numerology. Begin by finding your birth number by adding the digits of your birth eg. 8.6.1989�

8 + 6 + 1 + 9 + 8 + 9 = 41. Break that number down to a single digit thus:

4 + 1 = 5. Your birth number is 5. If the numbers still add up to a double digit number, just break them apart again.

Next, pick a name that has the same number as your birth number (use the grid at the bottom to find the number that goes with each letter). I believe Buckland discusses this technique in the Big Blue Book.

If you really like the name you’ve picked and you want it to match your birth number then add another letter or letters or subtract a letter to the name you’ve picked (sometimes you’ll like the name you make up better than the one you picked in the first place).

Sometimes, your name will be assigned by the coven. Otherwise if you have a name that you really like or have another system of correspondences that you want to use (such as letters from decomposing a sigil—especially powerful, or for instance let’s say you lived near the sea and developed a special rapport with the water element, then maybe Oceania would be an appropriate name.)

I wrote a program to help with using this method. The program uses two input boxes, one is where you input your birth date or other correspondence, and the other is where you input your proposed name. You then click the button and the program tells you whether you have chosen a numerologically balanced name.

By the way, the origin of using coven names stemmed from days of persecution when it was dangerous for a person to go by their ‘real’ name in the case of capture or others in the circle being captured.

The use of a magickal name (a name known only to yourself and the gods) is yet another name you need to choose. Typically, a person upon initiation or completing their first degree chooses or is given a name. Then upon completing your second and third degrees, you may also pick another name. Or, upon passing a particular milestone in your life, you may pick a name to reflect your changing attitudes about yourself or your evolving relationship to Deity.

Perhaps Bouncy Moonbeam fit you in college, but now as a HPS you prefer Selene Shadows. I do not believe in attaching a title such as Lord or Lady to your name. I believe the titles of lord and lady should be reserved for the Lord and Lady. I would also avoid actual deity names—to me it seems presumptuous.

As I said, if you don’t like the numerology, sigil decomposition (taking the letters that make up a sigil), look for some magickal correspondence that “speaks” to you and take a name from that. For instance, my full name Duir Gwalchmai, in Gaelic duir means oak, gwalch mai means may hawk. Oak is a sacred wood, and I’m pilot (hence I’ve always admired hawks) and I choose a Celtic name since while my immediate ancestry is not Celtic, I’m a Celt at heart.

We’ll be holding a class on name selection but that doesn’t mean you can’t be thinking about your magickal name in the meantime.

  • As many cords as there are witches present.

Preparation

  1. A bowl of hardboiled, scarlet-dyed eggs should be nearby for the choosing of the Spring Queen.
  2. The wreath of flowers should be on the altar for the choosing of the Spring Queen.

Entry into Sacred Space


The Challenge

(HPS rings bell three times)

HPS: Attention. Harken for the bell and gather in thy assigned places. Prepare for admission into the circle.

HPS: This time is not a time; this place is not a place; today is not a day; and this night is not a night. I stand at the threshold between the worlds. I stand ready to part the veil of mysteries. May the Ancient Ones help and protect us on our journey.

Blessed be.

Coveners: So mote it be.

HPS: (Challenges each covener by pointing her athame against their breast)

Better, you should run thyself through on mine blade than to enter here with malignity or fear in your heart. What say you? How dost thou come here?

Covener: In perfect love and perfect trust.

HPS: (Admits covener into the circle)

HP: (After being admitted into sacred space, the covener approaches the HP who then smudges the covener with sage or lavender. When this action is completed, the covener moves to their place about the altar.)






Attunement


HPS: This is an exercise which shall help us to combine and harmonize our energies. It is simplified version of the middle pillar exercise from Qaballistic ceremonial magick.


Stand relaxed but upright with your spine straight.

Inhale, then exhale.


Visualize the energy of the moon as bright while stream of light shining down upon your head


Begin to breathe in slowly to a count of three; hold this breath for a count of three, and then slowly exhale to a count of three. Then hold at the bottom for a count of three and then begin again.


While you are breathing, pull this light energy into your body. Let the light fill you until you are translucent and fairly glowing. Then let the light go and sink into the ground at your feet.

Let’s do this visualization for a total of three breaths.


Now let’s do this again but instead of grounding the energy, let it circulate around your aura in a circle. Visualize this energy coming out of the top of your head and going around the outskirts of your energy field, one stream going to the left and the other stream going to the right. The two streams should reconnect at the feet and enter back into the center of your body.


Let’s do this for three breaths.









Consecration of Water and Salt


Charge at the Pentacle

(HPS and HP with athames over their hearts and the other hand on the pentacle, bend in silence for a moment. During this time, they silently ask the Lord and Lady for strength and guidance.)

Blessing the Salt

HPS: (places dish of salt upon the pentacle)

I consecrate you, creature of salt to service of the Goddess,

Seasoning for magick, element of Earth, added to the waters of rebirth,

Serve us now so that we may complete the Great Work.


I cast from thee all hindrance and malignity,

So that in my works of magick you may well serve me.


All: So mote it be.

(HPS removes the dish of salt from the pentacle and then places the dish of water upon the pentacle. Then she takes the salt and using her athame drops into the water three measures of salt. She stirs the water three times with the tip of her athame. HPS sets the salt aside.)


Blessing the Water


HPS: I consecrate you, creature of water to service of the Goddess.

In this way, recall the seas, the Cauldron of Life, the vessel of our birth and rebirth,

And spring rains which bring life to the earth, aid us now in our works.


I cast from thee all hindrance and malignity,

So that in my works of magick you may well serve me.

Blessing the Air

(HP places the censer containing incense upon the pentacle)


HP: I consecrate thee O creature of Air to service of the God,

Bringer of both spring breezes fair, and March’s changeable weather,

HP: I consecrate thee O creature of Fire to the service of the God.

Signifier of the Sun, and light of magick’s pyre,

Circle Casting

HPS: (Addressing the coven)


While we cast the circle, I want all of you to concentrate and focus your energy on erecting the temple. Pull the energy, from the ground, from air, from the moon, from anywhere. Concentrate it within you, and then send it unto the sword or athame, or to me. Sense and see the glow and blue flame from athame tip to ground below and know that when I pass the circle is cast.


(HP and HPS take their athames and trace the sacred circle. If desired, they may leave a doorway in the northeastern quadrant. They walk together with the HP’s hand upon the HPS’ shoulder.)

HPS: I conjure thee, O Circle of Power, to be a meeting place of love, joy, and truth—a boundary between the worlds of men and the Realms of the Mighty Ones, a rampart and Protection against all wickedness that shall both contain and entertain the powers raised within. Wherefore do I consecrate thee in the name of Cenarius, the Lord of the spring Sun and Elune, the Lady of the Moon.



Strengthening the Circle

For through Her rest spring is born into summer gold.

Take my soul of triple thirds.
Become my flesh and fill my blood.

The Charge of the Goddess


(HPS as the Goddess Herself, the HPS turns to face the coven.)


HP: Listen to the words of the Great Mother, she who

of old was called among Azerothians, by names to many to name including the White Lady, Elune, Earth Mother, and the Goddess of the Moon.


HPS: Whenever ye have need of any thing, once in the month, and better it be when the moon is full, then shall ye assemble in some secret place and adore the spirit of Me, who is Queen of all witches.

There shall ye assemble, ye who are fain to learn all sorcery, yet have not won its deepest secrets; to these I will teach things that are yet unknown. And ye shall be free from slavery; and as a sign that ye be really free, ye shall be naked in your rites (under your clothes if you like); and ye shall dance, sing, feast, make music and love, all in My praise. For Mine is the ecstasy of the spirit, and Mine also is joy on earth; for My law is love unto all beings.

Keep pure your highest ideal; strive ever towards it; let naught stop you or turn you aside. For I am the secret door which opens upon the land of youth and Mine is the cup of wine of life, and the Cauldron of Rebirth, which is the Holy Grail of immortality.

I am the gracious goddess, who gives the gift of joy unto the heart of all. Upon earth, I gave the knowledge of the spirit eternal; and beyond death, I give peace and freedom, and reunion with those who have gone before.

Nor do I require sacrifice for behold, I am the mother of all living things, and all life is precious to Me therefore, I pour my love out upon the earth.

In your honor, we light the balefires until the smoke climbs to the stars from a thousand sparking spires.

Statement of Purpose

HP: Once more, again and again, eon after eon, the wheel of the year turns from darkness to light. Today is the celebration of the spring equinox: the first time this year that the sun shares an equal amount of the day with the dark of the night. However, from this day forward until the summer solstice the days will lengthen and warm.

Therefore, to honor the God and the Goddess, we have gathered here to celebrate the sabbat of Ostara—the spring equinox.




Main Working

Rekindling the Fire

HP: (stands in the East)

HPS: (stands in the West facing the HP across the cauldron. The HPS carries the wand in her right hand.)

Coveners: (array themselves about the circle.)


HPS: We kindle this fire today

In the presence of the Holy Ones, without malice, without jealousy,

Without envy, without fear of aught beneath the Sun,

But the High Gods, the Old Ones, and the Wise Ones.


Thee we invoke, O Light of Life,

Be Thou a bright flame before to light the night,

Be thou a guiding star above us;

Be thou a smooth path beneath us;

Blaze forth in our hearts a flame of love,

For neighbor, and kindred, foe and friend,

Let our compassion shine as though the sun above,

And for the beasts and birds of the wild places you love.


O radiant Son God of the Goddess divine,

From the lowliest to highest of all,

Show forth thy wisdom’s warming light to shine,

For us, for kindred kind, for all creatures great and small.


HPS: (Holds the wand aloft while walking slowly deosil around the cauldron until she is standing in front of the HP.


HPS: O Sun, be thou armed to conquer the dark.


HPS: (Presents the wand to the HP and then stands aside.)


HP: (Accepts the wand)

(Holds the wand high in salute and returns it to the altar.)


Maiden: (Presents lighter or a lit taper—which she lit from the altar—to the HPS. The maiden steps aside.)


HP: (Lights the cauldron candle with the taper/lighter and then hands the taper/lighter back to maiden who replaces it on the altar.)


Power Raising

HPS: (Leads the coveners in a power raising chant before the seeds of magick working)

Within the earth a tiny seed

sends shoots towards the Sun

The Maiden sings her song of spring

And the blooming has begun


Call the seed, the root, the bud

Call the Sun so bright

Sing your song and bid farewell

To the cold of winter’s night.


O lady of the scented leaves

Lay your cloak of vibrant green

Dance the wheel and dance the world

At the blooming of the land.


Within the egg the serpent sleeps

before the break of day

In colours bold he cracks the shell

And wakens all the fae


The ground is split by growing things

That weave upon the hills

The vines and flowers join the dance

To clothe the winter’s chill

Planting the Seeds of Magick


Maiden: (Distributes packets of seeds… When all coveners have a seed packet, the HPS continues speaking.)


HPS: Spring is the time of renewal, growth and of planting. It is the time of year when the dark months are behind us and we look forward to the lengthening days of spring and the eventual warmth and abundance of summer.


In times past when we have stood in this circle, we’ve raised power for change in our lives and tonight we’re going to do much the same with a twist. Instead of focusing our energy on the mundane we’re going to push our magickal envelopes. Tonight, explore your wildest magickal imaginings. Think about what magickal feat you’d like to accomplish in the coming springtime. Maybe you want to raise dragons. Maybe you want to join a faery ring. Maybe you finally want to find the courage to meet your animal or spirit guide. I don’t know—but whatever task you choose make it magickal, and make it bold. Stretch your imaginations!


Now, focus your intent of the magickal transformation or action you want to perform upon your packet of seeds. Be very clear about what it is you want.


(HPS pause for few moments to let the coveners focus their intent.)


Next, reaffirm and believe in yourself and your power. Remember if what you seek you do not find within, then you shall never find it without.


(HPS pauses again for a few moments.)


Finally, just as a tree grows, blooms, and then bears fruit, visualize your magickal endeavor come to fruition and how you’ll enjoy the fruits of your success.


(HPS pauses again for a few moments.)


But like any good spell, a plant must be cared for and nurtured. Therefore, take these seeds when you leave this circle and plant the seeds of magick. Know that as your seeds grow, and thrives as plant, so does your power. Each day when you see your seeds growing it shall be a talisman and testament to your power of will and magick. Take good care of these seeds so that your magick may grow.


Now to give these seeds a good start, to emphasize that the power and the magick reside within us, we’re going to do a circle chant. Beginning with the person to my left, each of you in turn shall say the following:   �


I am the flow and I am the ebb;

I am the weaver and I am the web.


(The HPS indicates who should start the chant then each covener in turn chants the above refrain.)

(The chant continues around the circle, each covener trying to say their piece more intently than the last until like a wave, it reaches the HPS/HP.)

HP: (Next, the High Priest names one of the women to be the Spring Queen and stands her in front of the altar. He crowns her with the chaplet of flowers .The High Priestess then presents the Spring Queen with her bouquet. Then, starting with the Spring Queen, everyone jumps over the fire, singly or in couples, not forgetting to wish.)

HPS: (lays her athame down and places the chalice on the pentacle.)

HPS: (removes the chalice and replaces it with the plate of cakes before the. She touches each cake in turn with her athame.)

HPS: May this offering to the God and Goddess keep us from ever knowing hunger.

Simple Feast (Cakes and Ale)

Note: the ceremony of Cakes and Ales now proceeds according to the HPS’ wishes: either the plate and chalice is passed from covener to covener and they serve themselves or each other according to coven custom or the HPS and HP proceed from covener to covener serving them and finally each other.

HPS: (When all of the coveners have partaken of the simple feast, the HPS places some food and drink in the libation bowl. HPS raises the libation plate in salute.)

Opening the Circle


(HPS and HP face the altar together. The Deities have been thanked and the Quarters dismissed, therefore, the next action is to ‘take down’ the circle. Since the circle was thrice cast, it should be thrice unwound. Also, because the circle was cast deosil it should be undone in a widdershins direction.)

HPS: O Circle of Power, as I have conjured thee I now release your energies into this blade.

(In your mind’s eye, see the circle dissolve into a wispy energy smoke, which the glowing blade readily absorbs)

Where there once existed a rampart between this world and the Otherworld, the rampart is no more. Once again, our realms are separate. However, the love and joy with which we met here tonight remains undiminished.

HPS:

Just as the holly must yield to the oak, and the stars set when dawn begins,

Imbolg 2010

What do groundhog s and the lactation of ewes have in common?

In this day probably nothing, but once upon a fairer time, both pointed reassuringly (at least as long as the groundhog didn’t see its shadow) to the lengthening of days and a return to springtime warmth. A quite literal translation of the Celtic—Old Irish— word, Imbolg (actually, Óimelc), is the lactation of ewes. Some also claim the word means, in the belly, but I believe that definition is probably a debasement of the word’s true meaning. I any of you reading this are more expert in Gaelic than me, feel free to correct my assumptions. Finally, since the Wiccan Sabbat, Imbolg, and Groundhog Day celebrations occur on the same day, you now know the connection between the two events.

Our coven, the Circle of the Dark Moon, like so many other Wiccans celebrated Imbolg this past Tuesday evening. Barb, one of our second-degree students, led the ritual. She also did a fine job of writing said ritual. The main working of the ritual was an Earth-healing dance and chant, which was appropriate since our tradition focuses more on the agricultural aspects in this the first of the fertility Sabbats.

Afterwards, we had a potluck dinner that featured many traditional Celtic foods. Scott, Barb’s son, and one of our first-degree students, prepared an Irish stew with a curry kicker. He also brought freshly baked bread. Michelle (first-degree student), brought a warm milk prepared with turmeric and cinnamon. The only way that drink could have been more appropriate for the Sabbat was if she had used ewe’s milk. Even though she was not assigned anything for this food rotation, Elaine (first-degree student) volunteered to bring the paper plates and plastic ware so that cleanup was a breeze—a fact that was not lost on my grateful wife. For dessert, there was chocolate cake. Okay, nothing traditional there, but hey, it was chocolate.

Thanks to everyone who attended, and brought food or consumables, and especially to our guest, Jess, who quite literally and quite appropriately—after all, Imbolg is a fertility Sabbat—had something “in the belly.” Jess informed us that she was five months pregnant and that she’s looking forward to her upcoming wedding. Finally, congratulations to Barb for a fine job in writing the ritual and in performing the Priestess duties. It was a pleasure conducting the ritual with you.

About Us

The Circle of the Dark Moon (CotDM). CotDM is a teaching coven that follows the Dark Moon Tradition. The Dark Moon Tradition is described as a,

“…mix of Alexandrian Wicca, and Ceremonial Magick, with a bit of British Traditionalism, and Gardnerianism ideals included for good measure.”

However, ours is not an eclectic tradition. While we have borrowed ideas from other traditions, we’ve only borrowed similar ideologies, and our teachings reflect a defined path and philosophy.

In circle, and in-group workings, we follow a Celtic pantheon, but encourage our members to form relationships with their own Deities.

We are organized into an outer circle (for casual members), and an inner circle (comprised of initiated members, and members who have a special relationship with us.)

What’s it like joining the ‘dark side’? Well, for one thing, we have better cookies. Of course, we meant the previous remark tongue-firmly-in-cheek. However, we say seriously, be prepared to better yourself, your magick, and your spirituality.   • Open Rituals
    • Where all are welcome who come with a sincere desire to honor the Lord and the Lady.
    • Rituals usually start at 8:00PM, and last about an hour with a following potluck.

  • Classes in Wicca & Magick
    • Currently we have First Degree & Second Degree classes in session.
    • We also hold online classes via the internet and TeamSpeak software.
      • These are live classes with a teacher which includes lectures, and question & answers sessions.

    • Classes are free of charge except for the purchase of books and materials.
  • Group Mind Exercise Sessions (GME)
    • GME is our newest activity. It is a non-ritual, non-magickal, but hopefully still spiritual gathering for socializing and exercising at our covenstead every Saturday at 2:00 PM.
    • Activities include: gentle Yoga, T’ai Chi Chuan, Nature Walks, Guided Meditations, and hopefully in the future more vigorous exercises such as short runs and bike rides.
  • Field Trips and Other Learning Experiences
    • Annual trek to the Georgia Renaissance Faire.
    • Visits to herb farms.
    • Community Outreach programs.

Yule Seeker Dedications

Circle of the Dark Moon Yule Dedication
Dedication is usually a first step for coveners as well as solitaires. It is a group or personal declaration of intent to follow the Wiccan path and always strive to honor the Gods, increase your knowledge of the craft, and live by the rede. Within traditions such as the Dark Moon tradition dedication is usually followed after a period of study (traditionally a year and a day) which leads to a first degree (the dedicant is now considered a true witch).

After a first degree comes a second degree where the witch now takes on the responsibility of teaching first-years and additional coven responsibilities.

Upon attaining a third degree a witch may decide to leave the coven and hive-off forming their own coven. For those third degree witches remaining in the coven, there are adept and master adept degrees.
